MLB All-Star Game: The All-Time Chicago Cubs All-Star Team

Joel ReuterJun 7, 2018

The 2011 MLB All-Star Game rosters are set. For the third straight seasons the Cubs are left with just one player—shortstop Starlin Castro—representing the team this season.

Throughout the season, the Cubs have had some fantastic players who have been regulars at the Midsummer Classic. Going as far back as catcher Gabby Hartnett, to someone as recent as slugger Sammy Sosa the team has made its mark on the game.

So here is a look at the all-time Cubs All-Star team, with a breakdown of everyone who has been honored at each position, and specifically who has the most All-Star nods at each position.

Catcher

1 of 10

GABBY HARTNETT

All-Star Game Appearances: 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938

All-Star Game Stats: 2-for-10, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 3B

Hartnett was one of three Cubs to appear in the first ever MLB All-Star Game back in 1933, and he is easily the best catcher in the history of the Chicago Cubs.

He was 32 years old when he appeared in that first All-Star game, and certainly would have appeared in more had the All-Star game been around when he broke into the league. Either way, he made six straight trips to top all Cubs catchers.

OTHER CUBS CATCHERS ON ALL-STAR TEAMS

ERNIE BANKS

All-Star Game Appearances: 1962, 1965, 1967, 1969

All-Star Game Stats: 4-for-10, 1 R, 1 3B

Banks started his career as a shortstop back in 1952, making seven appearances as a shortstop before moving to first base during the 1962 season.

The position changed prolonged his career, allowing him to play 19 seasons, and he made his final All-Star appearance in 1969 at the age of 38, as season in which he went on to hit 23 home runs and drive in 106 runs.

All-Star Game Stats: 3-for-26, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 SB

Sandberg is one of the greatest second baseman to ever play the game, and he was the class of the National League for a decade, as he made ten straight All-Star appearances, starting nine of those games.

Despite his dominance at his position, his All-Star game performance left a lot to be desired, as he hit just .115 in the Midsummer Classic throughout his career.

Shortstop

4 of 10

ERNIE BANKS

All-Star Game Appearances: 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961

All-Star Game Stats: 6-for-23, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, 3 2B

For the second time, Banks appears on this list, as he made his first seven All-Star appearances as a shortstop before making four more following his move to first base.

Statistically speaking, he did most of his damage in the Midsummer Classic as a shortstop, with his best game coming in 1960 when he went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two RBI.

OTHER CUBS SHORTSTOPS ON ALL-STAR TEAMS

Woody English- 1933
Billy Jurges- 1937
Don Kessinger- 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974

Third Base

5 of 10

RON SANTO

All-Star Game Appearances: 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973

All-Star Game Stats: 5-for-15, 1 R, 3 RBI

Santo was among the premier third baseman in the league during the 1960s, as he and was as solid as it got for the Cubs both offensively and defensively.

He may be the best player not currently enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and he bled Cubbie Blue his entire life as a player and a broadcaster.

OTHER CUBS THIRD BASEMEN ON ALL-STAR TEAMS

Stan Hack- 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943
Andy Pafko- 1948
Randy Jackson- 1954, 1955
Bill Madlock- 1975
Vance Law- 1988

Outfielder

6 of 10

SAMMY SOSA

All-Star Game Appearances: 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004

All-Star Game Stats: 2-for-12, 1 RBI

Sosa was a staple in the National League's starting lineup in the early part of the 2000s, as he was among the premier sluggers in the game during a time where it seemed as though everyone was a slugger.

It is hard to believe, looking back, that he did not start the All-Star game during the 1998 season, the same year he and Mark McGwire captivated the nation with their assault on Roger Maris' home run record.

OTHER CUBS OUTFIELDERS ON ALL-STAR TEAMS

Kiki Cuyler- 1934
Chuck Klein- 1934
Frank Demaree- 1936, 1937
Augie Galan- 1936
Hank Leiber- 1940, 1941
Bill Nicholson- 1940, 1941, 1943, 1944
Peanuts Lowrey- 1946

Outfielder

7 of 10

BILLY WILLIAMS

All-Star Game Appearances: 1962, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1972,

All-Star Game Stats: 3-for-11, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R

Considering the Hall of Fame career that Williams had, it is a bit surprising that he only made six All-Star game appearances, with only two starts, but when you take into account that guys like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Roberto Clemente were also manning the NL outfield it makes a little more sense.

Regardless, Williams had a fantastic career, with a line of .290 BA, 426 HR, 1475 RBI that earned him enshrinement in the Hall of Fame in 1987 in his sixth year on the ballot.

Andy Pafko- 1947, 1949, 1950
Hank Sauer- 1950, 1952
Ralph Kiner- 1953
Walt Moryn- 1958

ANDRE DAWSON

All-Star Game Appearances: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991

All-Star Game Stats: 5-of-21, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 2B

When Dawson came to the Cubs, no one though he had five more All-Star appearances in him, with two bad knees after years of playing on the turf in Montreal.

However, he proved everyone wrong, winning the NL MVP in 1987 and playing six very productive season with the Cubs before his career wound down. He was finally honored with enshrinement this past season, although not as a Cub as he wanted.

Starting Pitcher

9 of 10

CLAUDE PASSEAU

All-Star Game Appearances: 1941, 1942, 1943, 1946

All-Star Game Stats: 0-2, 8.22 ERA, 4 Ks, 7.2 IP

With all the talented starting pitchers that the Cubs have had through the years, it is hard to believe that it is Passeau who has made the most All-Star game appearances with four. Not only that, but he is the only Cubs hurler to ever start an All-Star game, doing so in 1946.

That is not to that he was not a good pitcher, as he won 124 games in his nine years with the Cubs, posting a 2.96 ERA over that span and winning at least 15 games an impressive five times.

BRUCE SUTTER

All-Star Game Appearances: 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980

All-Star Game Stats: 2-0, 1 Save, 0.00 ERA, 6 Ks, 5.2 IP

The Cubs have had some terrific closers over the years between Lee Smith, Sutter, Randy Myers, and more recently guys like Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol.

If he keeps up his current level of play, Marmol could certainly give Sutter a run here, but for now it is Sutter that holds the distinction of reliever with the most All-Star Game appearances.
