Spurs Lennon to Fight as Liverpool Try Not to Look Back

Andrew McNairOct 31, 2008

They say too much of a good thing is not very good for you but then again, they probably weren’t talking about the Barclay’s Premier League—or Hot or Not, hopefully.

Forget Eastenders and Top Gear, England’s greatest show returned for a mid week special and as always, it was full of surprises. In one extraordinary case, the unexpected was in the final credits.

It must have been like a Saturday night on Tyneside as Newcastle United fans finally celebrated a win after they beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Premier League’s "chav" striking some fear into the opposition maybe? Or was Newcastle’s return to winning ways on Joey Barton’s return just a coincidence?

David Bentley hasn’t exactly impressed at Tottenham Hotspur since his big money move from Blackburn Rovers, but that 45-yard volley against Arsenal on Wednesday night will have gone a long way to winning over the White Hart Lane crowd.

It was an incredible game and only the Arsenal fans would have begrudged Spurs Aaron Lennon’s equalizer.

That 45-yard volley wasn’t the only great goal on Wednesday. Jermaine Jenas scored Spurs third in their 4-4 draw with a pressing run and lovely curling left foot shot into the corner from 20 yards. Brett Emerton reminded everyone of his free kick abilities with Blackburn’s second consolation in their 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa.

Goal of the week wasn’t any of those though, it was Frank Lampard’s exquisite chip from the corner of the box across the goal into the far corner with his weaker foot. The scariest thing is he’d probably do it again if you gave him another chance, worldclass.

Last year, we rarely saw the best of Manchester United before they went onto a European and league double. They haven’t been too impressive this year either but it’s Liverpool who are getting our attention. Another hard fought win, this time over Portsmouth thanks to a Steven Gerrard penalty. Liverpool are in the form of champions.

We hope you saw the Berbatov shuffle, shades of Cantona according to Hot or Not.

It has been ten years since John Terry made his league debut, no wonder Hot or Not is sick of him. We bet he has his Halloween costume ready and waiting, he is dressing up as Mark Halsey complete with red and yellow cards.

Stoke City’s Rory Delap has set up more goals in the league this year than any overpaid superstar and he has done so with no help at all from his feet. Another throw in won them the game midweek after Ricardo Fuller rose highest to head home against Sunderland.

Ten games, one clean sheet for Everton. You might be thinking that isn’t very good but before Wednesday nights 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers, it was nine games, no clean sheets.

It was a former Everton player who earned Fulham a vital three points at home to relegation rivals Wigan Athletic. Andy Johnson announced his return to form with a brace but he could well have had a hat-trick.

NOT

We hat to keep banging on about it, but if it Heurelho Gomes can then so can we. Harry Redknapp, you need a new 'keeper, either that or employ a boxing corner man to help out his defence.

Manuel Almunia has obviously been watching old Arsenal DVD’s, either that or it was the very best of David Seaman. How to concede from over 40 yards.

Gianfranco Zola was full of optimism as he took over at West Ham United but four defeats on the trot have left a dampener on Upton Park and the rumours are their going to sell? An outsider for the drop?

Well it had to happen sometime and not many would have believed Hull City would be above West Ham, never mind 5th spot above Man United. It will be very interesting to see how they react to their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Gaff of the week goes to the Hull City defence, who after weeks of courageous defending handed Nicolas Anelka a gift when the two centre backs and the goalkeeper left the ball for each other. However only Anelka was alert to the bouncing ball who and stole in put the ball in an empty net.

Bolton Wanderers have conceded four goals in ten games this season. They wish. Bolton have only scored four goals in their ten league games this season. Hot or Not thinks we’ll add them to the relegation scrappers.

What can we say about Manchester City after their 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough? Well they are the perfect advert for Hot or Not or should it be Hot then Not? It would have helped if Daniel Sturridge hadn’t bagged miss of the week. The youngster fired a shot from six yards. The result: a throw in to Middlesbrough.

So why don’t we finish tonight with the credits or is that credit?
