NBA Draft 2011: How Each Detroit Pistons Draft Pick Fits into the Pistons System

Mike PickneyJun 30, 2011

The Detroit Pistons continue their fight to return to prominence in the NBA. Having missed the .500 mark for three consecutive seasons, the club needs to make every pick count. With their three choices in the draft, they selected standouts Brandon Knight, Kyle Singler and Vernon Macklin.

Here's a look at who they nabbed and how they might fit into the team's future.

Vernon Macklin

1 of 3

Listed at 6'10" and 244 pounds, Macklin has the size to bang down low. But the Florida product wasn't a great rebounder in college and may find himself spending time overseas. At 24, the age of this Gator calls his potential long-term development into question.

Though the Pistons have had great success developing centers drafted low, like Bill Laimbeer and Ben Wallace, Macklin's upside doesn't seem nearly that high. If he's kept around, he could put some pressure on Jason Maxiell, an underachiever on a generous multi-year deal.

Anything you get from the 52nd pick in a weak draft is a bonus.

Kyle Singler

2 of 3

Pistons fans can be forgiven for having not-so-fond memories of Singler's college days at Duke, where he was a nemesis to the Michigan Wolverines.

Singler's tools are limited, but he brings lots of energy and a high basketball I.Q. He is a complete player that comes from a top-notch program. He'll need to push Austin Daye for minutes. And he can certainly shoot.

Singler brings character and the potential to contribute. You can't expect a lot more from a second-rounder.

Brandon Knight

3 of 3

The Pistons were pleased to find this Kentucky product still available at the eighth pick, with some mock drafts showing him going as high as third. And John Calipari has a great track record with point guards going to the NBA.

Knight appears to be another building block to go along with Greg Monroe. He has the ability to stretch the floor, penetrate and finish at the basket. He also has the tools to be an excellent defender.

There is speculation he is more of a combo guard than a point guard, which should make him an interesting backcourt mate for Rodney Stuckey. Stuckey may continue to handle the ball quite a bit as the Pistons take advantage of Knight's shooting ability.

Will he start on day one? The smart money says yes.
