NBA Trade Speculation: Derrick Williams in Doesn't Mean Michael Beasley's Out

Max MinskerJun 27, 2011

The Minnesota Timberwolves made what would seem to be the obvious choice during Thursday's draft, taking Arizona forward Derrick Williams. This class has been said to be a two-player class, and I wouldn't be surprised if Williams ends up as the best player to be drafted here.

With Williams now on board, the question now becomes: What do the Wolves do with Michael Beasley?

Beasley and Williams are similar in style and play the same position. It's going to hard to find minutes for Beasley, Williams, Love and Anthony Randolph in the forward spots.

It's unlikely that Love or Randolph will be able to play center, so the Wolves are stuck with a huge jam.

While many people believe that someone will have to be moved, it would seem as if the general manager of the Timberwolves, David Kahn, would beg to differ. He has said in multiple interviews since the draft that all the key players from the team last year will be back again.

Personally, I believe that Beasley, Love and Williams could form an effective three-man rotation in the forward spots, but the rest have to go. In order for the Wolves to make this work, they need to trade both Martell Webster and Anthony Randolph, probably for future picks.

In some lineups, it's possible Beasley may be able to be moved to shooting guard in stretches. In other lineups, Anthony Randolph could be moved to center. Against teams like the Bobcats that have no offensive frontcourt, they may be able to get away with either Randolph or Love at center.

Other nights, when the Wolves are matching up with teams like the Magic or Lakers, they may need to play Darko Milicic for 30 minutes. The Wolves can go with any number of lineups, and as Kahn has said, the Wolves could cause some matchup problems for other teams because of their versatility.

The Wolves have many different lineups they can put on the floor, and the different combinations they can use will be something they can use to their advantage this coming season.

Although it seems like Beasley, Williams and Love will be incapable of coexisting together, I think it gives the Wolves an advantage, and if the players buy into it, I see no reason why keeping all three can't be an effective way for the team to go until they know for sure what they have in Derrick Williams.
