2011 NBA Draft Results: The Biggest Reaches and Falls of the First Round

Chris TernateJun 24, 2011

With all the dust from the 2011 NBA Draft settled, the final draft board looks a bit different compared to previous projections.

Pre-draft workouts held earlier in the week helped narrow down selections, and the temptations of draft day trades extended their reach from pick 30 all the way up to pick number two.

So even as players have settled in with which team they'll be playing with next season, it can't really be determined what impact players will have with their respective teams quite yet.

However, some players seem to have higher expectations than others, as some were taken higher than predicted while some experience a drop from their projected standing in the draft.

Here are some of the night's biggest reaches and falls.

Stay tuned to Bleacher Report for all things related to the NBA Draft, from Live Results to Grades and Trade Rumors.

Fall: Kawhi Leonard

1 of 4

Kawhi Leonard at number 15 is definitely a steal in the draft.

So with the Indiana Pacers ultimately deciding to give up their pick in exchange for the San Antonio Spurs' George Hill, the Spurs get away with one of the best prospects of this year's draft class.

Leonard is a high energy, explosive athlete with some big time hops and some long arms. He crashes the boards and really knows how to get buckets near the basket.

His jump shot will probably need work, but once he gets that set, expect him to flourish in San Antonio, especially under Gregg Popovich's guidance.

Leonard was expected to go in the top 10 at least, so at 15, he's definitely one of the biggest falls of the draft.

Reach: Jimmer Fredette

2 of 4

At first, the former National Player of the Year seemed to not be getting enough credit, projected to go outside the top 10 or perhaps even lower.

But BYU's Jimmer Fredette apparently made a good impression with the Maloofs and with the Sacramento Kings organization since they were part of the three way deal that sent their number seven pick out in exchange for Fredette.

The complicated trade brought John Salmons as well as Fredette to the Kings.

The Maloofs were apparently big on Fredette, and the Kings had a void to fill at point guard. So while Fredette may not be the best point guard of the league, he's definitely some instant offense. Expect him, though, to be tossed into the point guard position, especially with so many unsure of what his true potential is.

Coming into the draft, Fredette was one of the guys with the biggest question marks looming over his head. Would he become a Steve Nash or a J.J. Redick or even an Adam Morrison?

Guess the Kings didn't mind reaching out for him to find out.

Fall: Brandon Knight

3 of 4

When the Detroit Pistons took guard Brandon Knight, they went with the most talented player still hanging around even if he may not really fit their team.

It isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, since there are plenty of guards for Knight to learn from on the team, and since some of those guys could be moved, he could see a bigger role on the team in his future.

His talent alone could have been enough for him to go in the top five; however, teams passed him up opting to go with the "bigger is better" route.

One man's loss is another man's gain, though, as the Pistons get in Knight what the first seven teams passed up: a hard working combo guard with an excellent jump shot and some tight defense.

Knight could have filled the Kings' point guard void, but they went a different route, and Knight fell into Detroit's hands; however, at least he didn't fall even further down the board.

Reach: Tristan Thompson

4 of 4

The Cleveland Cavaliers taking Tristan Thompson with the fourth pick is a bit of a reach.

Definitely an athletic big man, Thompson can crash the boards, defend and block shots in addition to score.

Its understandable to draft a power forward like Thompson, however, since the Cavs were projected to have a shot at Turkish big man Enes Kanter, who was ultimately taken one spot ahead by the Jazz.

But the Cavaliers could have gone and drafted at another position since they are essentially set at the power forward slot with J.J. Hickson. However, Thompson could probably end up outshining Hickson if he develops well.

Time will tell, though, for the Cavaliers, but at least in Thompson, they reached out and got a player who, while undersized at his position, is well rounded and can definitely improve.
