NBA Draft 2011: 5 Teams Who Will Have to Make Tough Draft Night Decisions

Eric BowmanJun 23, 2011

The 2011 NBA Draft is finally here.

The selections will begin tonight at 7:30 PM ET in Newark, New Jersey. Several teams have major needs, and others only have small concerns.

Seven teams have two first round draft picks. With all the rumors circulating around, nobody knows what to expect tonight.

The one thing we do know is that most teams have a very hard decision to make.

Here are five teams that will have to make difficult choices in the 2011 NBA Draft.

5. Detroit Pistons

1 of 5

The Detroit Pistons don't have a head coach right now. That just blows my mind, because the head coach needs to be involved in who the team picks on draft night.

The Pistons have the No. 8 overall pick. They are a team very far from making the playoffs and in need of a lot of help. This is a crucial draft for the struggling franchise.

There have been rumors about the Pistons possibly trading the No. 8 pick to the Houston Rockets for the No. 14 and No. 23 picks. That would be a wise move in this weak draft class. Picking up two players over throwing all your eggs into one basket is a smarter move.

The Pistons don't have an easy decision to make. Will they trade their pick? Or will they take the gamble on a risky prospect like Bismack Biyombo?

4. Washington Wizards

2 of 5

The Washington Wizards have two first round draft picks. They have the No. 6 and No. 18 picks.

There have been multiple rumors about what the Wizards will do on draft night.

Will they trade up to the No. 2 pick? If they do, will they deal JaVale McGee in the process?

I believe Washington's best move would be to keep both picks and add more young talent to an improving team. However, they really want Enes Kanter.

To get Kanter they will definitely have to trade up. Will they take the risk?

3. Utah Jazz

3 of 5

The Utah Jazz are one of two teams with two lottery picks. They have the No. 3 and No. 12 picks.

The Jazz have to decide if they want to jump up in the draft. If they do, will it be to the No. 2 pick, or somewhere else in the top 10?

I think the Jazz would be better off keeping both picks. If they do that, then they have to decide which players to draft.

Will they take a point guard or a big man at No. 3? Should they draft Jimmer Fredette if he's available at No. 12?

These are not easy decisions for a club that recently traded their franchise player.

2. Minnesota Timberwolves

4 of 5

Several teams are in contact with the Minnesota Timberwolves. They all want the No. 2 overall pick, which puts the Timberwolves in a very tough position.

With Ricky Rubio now joining the Timberwolves, there is talk that Minnesota will keep the No. 2 pick. However, recent rumors have hinted that the Timberwolves might be getting some serious offers for the draft pick.

They have to decide whether or not to trade the No. 2 overall pick. If they do, Minnesota must make sure they are getting a good deal in return. If they don't, then they could end up regretting it down the line.

What will the Timberwolves do with the No. 2 overall pick?

1. Cleveland Cavaliers

5 of 5

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been on the clock for over a month now. What will they do?

The Cavaliers have the No. 1 and the No. 4 picks. They have talked about trying to acquire a third first-round pick. They have discussed trading up to get the No. 2 pick as well.

Cleveland has also debated who to draft at No. 1 overall. Will they pick Kyrie Irving or Derrick Williams? At No. 4, they've thought about drafting Jonas Valanciunas, who won't be joining the NBA for a year or two.

Cleveland doesn't have it easy tonight. If they make the wrong move, it will push this franchise back even further.

The Cavaliers have the toughest decision to make tonight. They are a rebuilding franchise that needs a lot of help.
