2011 NBA Mock Draft: Where Jimmer Fredette Lands and the Rest of the 1st Round

Roberto PayneJun 22, 2011

The 2011 NBA draft is tomorrow afternoon and it's a very exciting time for many teams. It's a chance for the teams to draft the next superstar of the league and each team would love to get that player in this draft.

That being said, this is one of the weakest draft classes in memory and the depth that we have grown accustomed to is not present. But there is still intrigue with this draft class. Where will The Jimmer be selected? Is Irving or Williams the next face of the Cavs? Read on for the answers to these questions and more.

No. 1 Pick: Cleveland Cavaliers Select Kyrie Irving PG, Duke

1 of 30

There have been reports that Kyrie Irving will go first and yet, there have been reports the Cavs haven't decided yet. Still, it looks like Irving will be the new face of the Cavs. Irving gives them a very good player who is well rounded. Irving is a good shooter, creative passer and a leader.

He wants to be drafted here and he's going to get his wish.

No. 2 Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves Select Derrick Williams SF/PF, Arizona

2 of 30

Derrick Williams gives the T-Wolves more options at small forward and power forward and they get one of the most athletic players in the draft class. The only problem with Williams is that he plays the same position as Michael Beasley and the rumors of a Beasley trade will heat up as soon as Williams is selected.

No. 3 Pick: Utah Jazz Select Brandon Knight PG, Kentucky

3 of 30

The Jazz need a point guard of the future and Brandon Knight is their guy. Knight is going to a Utah team that is going to be very solid next year and he will not be forced into a starting role. This is important because he will be allowed to get more accustomed to the NBA. He fits well in Utah and he should be the starter in a year or two.

No. 4 Pick: Cleveland Cavaliers Select Enes Kanter C, Kentucky

4 of 30

With Kanter going to the Cavs at this pick, the Cavs get their point guard (Irving) and center of the future. Kanter gives the Cavs a player that likes to bang down low and isn't afraid to be physical on defense. This is a great pick for the Cavs.

No. 5 Pick: Toronto Raptors Select Kawhi Leonard SF/PF, San Diego State

5 of 30

The Toronto Raptors need help all over the place and Kawhi Leonard gives them a combo forward who isn't afraid to do the dirty work. Leonard isn't a good shooter or a great ball-handler but he does the little things, whether it be diving for a loose ball or playing physical defense.

Leonard is a true blue-collar basketball player and the Raptors could use him.

No. 6 Pick: Washington Wizards Select Jan Vesely PF, Czech Republic

6 of 30

The Wizards have mainstays with John Wall, JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche and Jordan Crawford. The only position not covered is small forward.

Enter Jan Vesely. He is considered more of a combo forward and thus could be the starter at small forward or the backup at power forward. Either way, the Wizards are going to love Vesely's athleticism and his solid shooting stroke.

No. 7 Pick: Sacramento Kings Select Kemba Walker PG, Connecticut

7 of 30

The Kings are looking for a point guard and they will select Kemba Walker. Kemba is one of the better offensive guards in the draft and the Kings need plenty of offense. Add Kemba to the current core of Tyreke Evans, Omri Casspi and DeMarcus Cousins, and the Kings have a couple very good players.

No. 8 Pick: Detroit Pistons Select Bismack Biyombo PF, Congo

8 of 30

The Pistons need help down low and they will get that in the form of super athletic Bismack Biyombo. Biyombo has tremendous upside but is very raw. The Pistons are banking on the fact that he has all the tools to succeed. If they work on his offensive skills more, Biyombo could be a deadly threat on both offense and defense.

No. 9 Pick: Charlotte Bobcats Select Marcus Morris PF, Kansas

9 of 30

The Bobcats are another team that needs help all over the place but they should look to go big at this choice. Marcus Morris will give them a physical player that can stretch the defense and hit midrange jumpers.

No. 10 Pick: Milwaukee Bucks Select Alec Burks SG, Colorado

10 of 30

The Milwaukee Bucks have been long rumored to want a shooting guard at this pick and they should choose between the slasher Alec Burks and shooter Klay Thompson. I think they take Burks and slide him next to Brandon Jennings.

Burks has the potential to improve his stroke and he could be a deadly offensive player if he does so.

No. 11 Pick: Golden State Warriors Select Klay Thompson SG, Washington State

11 of 30

The Warriors could really use a center but the best available center is Nikola Vucevic and this is much too high to reach for him. They then will look to shore up their shooting guard position with shooter Klay Thompson.

With this pick, it all but guarantees Monta Ellis will be traded. Ellis could then be switched for Andre Iguodala; the team would be much improved and a contender for a playoff spot.

No. 12 Pick: Utah Jazz Select Chris Singleton SF, Florida State

12 of 30

With the Utah Jazz taking Brandon Knight with the third pick, they could then use a shooting guard or a small forward. With no shooting guards worth taking here, Chris Singleton gets the pick. Singleton gives them one of, if not the best, man-to-man defender in the draft and a replacement for Andrei Kirilenko.

No. 13 Pick: Phoenix Suns Select Tristan Thompson PF, Texas

13 of 30

The Suns need a shooting guard and a power forward but power forward is much more of a priority. Tristan Thompson gives them a solid rebounder with a raw offensive game. Thompson would have time to work on his offensive game and fits into the Suns' schemes.

No. 14 Pick: Houston Rockets Select Jordan Hamilton SF, Texas

14 of 30

The Rockets could really use a center but it's a little too early for Nikola Vucevic. They then will go for another position they want to shore up: small forward. Jordan Hamilton gives them a solid shooter and an all-around player.

No. 15 Pick: Indiana Pacers Select Jimmer Fredette PG/SG, Brigham Young

15 of 30

The Pacers really need bench scoring and they will get that in The Jimmer. They get the best shooter in the draft and a bunch of good press. People love Jimmer and he will no doubt bring people into the seats. The only problem is what position Jimmer will play; most scouts say point guard since he is undersized.

No. 16 Pick: Philadelphia 76ers Select Markieff Morris PF, Kansas

16 of 30

The 76ers really need help down low and Markieff Morris will give that. Markieff is the more physical of the two Morris twins and is a much better defensive player than his brother. Markieff will be the eventual successor to Elton Brand.

No. 17 Pick: New York Knicks Select Jonas Valanciunas C, Lithuania

17 of 30

The Knicks really need a center or defensive role players. With Chris Singleton already selected, they will look to Jonas Valanciunas to resolve their problems at center. There is a minor problem with Valanciunas though: He could have a difficult contract with his team (Lietuvos Rytas) and could take a year or two to come over.

No. 18 Pick: Washington Wizards Select Donatas Montiejunas C, Lithuania

18 of 30

The Wizards get another European star and an absolute steal at this pick. Montiejunas is a versatile big man and gives the Wizards another solid bench player. If he could bulk up then he could easily be one of the better big men from this draft class.

No. 19 Pick: Charlotte Bobcats Select Nikola Vucevic C, USC

19 of 30

With the Bobcats selecting Marcus Morris with their earlier pick, they now look to shore up the center spot. Vucevic wowed teams at the combine with his measurements and he shot up draft boards. The Bobcats could really use his sheer size and he is definitely an upgrade over Kwame Brown.

No. 20 Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves Select Marshon Brooks SG, Providence

20 of 30

The Timberwolves have their forwards and point guard of the future and now will look to fill the void at shooting guard. With Marshon Brooks, they get one of the better pure scorers in the draft and a good athlete. He gives them a young shooting guard combination with Wesley Johnson and before you know it, the T-Wolves are much improved.

No. 21 Pick: Portland Trail Blazers Select Kenneth Faried PF, Morehead State

21 of 30

The Trail Blazers need size more than anything and preferably a center. But with all the solid centers having been selected already, they look to the ultimate role player in Kenneth Faried. I say ultimate role player because Faried probably won't ever be a starter. But with his heart and rebounding, he could be a great bench player for the Blazers.

He's one of those glue guys that makes championship teams.

No. 22 Pick: Denver Nuggets Select Tobias Harris SF/PF, Tennessee

22 of 30

The Nuggets got a seriously good haul from the Knicks for Carmelo Anthony and they should be looking to add depth now. Tobias Harris will give them a combo forward who is solid on both ends of the floor. He is capable of contributing in multiple ways.

No. 23 Pick: Houston Rockets Select Iman Shumpert PG, Georgia Tech

23 of 30

Houston has already selected Jordan Hamilton and there still isn't a center worth taking at this pick, so they go for lanky point guard Iman Shumpert. Shumpert is very big for a point guard (6'6") and is one of the better perimeter defensive players in the draft class.

He creates a ton of mismatches and if he can improve his shooting stroke, he could be an even more deadly matchup nightmare.

No. 24 Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder Select Tyler Honeycutt SF, UCLA

24 of 30

The Thunder only have one glaring hole on their roster: a backup for Kevin Durant. Durant was the only small forward listed on the roster and had to play a ton of minutes. He could use a break or two a game and Tyler Honeycutt will provide that. Honeycutt is a good athlete and a decent shooter.

No. 25 Pick: Boston Celtics Select JaJuan Johnson PF, Purdue

25 of 30

The Celtics are trying to get younger and it is important they use this pick wisely. They need help on the frontline and JaJuan Johnson is one of the most versatile big men in the draft class. He can hit the midrange jumper consistently and is one of the more athletic bigs in the draft class. He could help with the power forward position and occasionally also at center.

No. 26: Dallas Mavericks Select Justin Harper PF, Richmond

26 of 30

The Mavs are coming off their championship win over the Miami Heat and they don't really need too much help. This pick will be used simply to add more depth to the team. Justin Harper is the definition of a stretch power forward; he has excellent range and is a good athlete.

No. 27 Pick: New Jersey Nets Select Josh Selby PG, Kansas

27 of 30

Josh Selby has the talent to be a lottery pick but he lacks the maturity to be one. Couple that with a bad first season at Kansas and it's no surprise why he is available here. That being said, the Nets are getting a steal with Selby this late. He is an athletic combo guard with a deadly shooting stroke.

No. 28 Pick: Chicago Bulls Select Jeremy Tyler PF, USA

28 of 30

Jeremy Tyler was one of the better high school players in his grade when he decided to leave after his junior year and play overseas for a year. This was a huge mistake. He had a mediocre year and would be much higher if he would have been a one-and-done college player.

He still has talent and could be one of the better bigs in the draft class but he needs the proper coaching. Tom Thibodeau can definitely provide that and Tyler could thrive in Chicago.

No. 29 Pick: San Antonio Spurs Select Nikola Mirotic SF, Serbia

29 of 30

The Spurs are known to be excellent drafters of European players and Nikola Mirotic will be the next solid European selected by the Spurs. Mirotic has the talent to be a lottery pick but he has a difficult contract that could take a year or two to fix.

The Spurs don't need him now and they are willing to wait for his matured services in a couple years.

No. 30 Pick: Chicago Bulls Select Norris Cole PG, Cleveland State

30 of 30

The Chicago Bulls don't have many needs but they could use a backup point guard and a starting shooting guard. I think they will get their shooting guard through free agency but that leaves the backup point guard available.

Enter Norris Cole. Cole is a proven scorer and a willing passer; he could give D-Rose more time to rest and the team wouldn't lose any scoring.
