College Football 2011: Oregon CB Cliff Harris Suspended Indefinitely

Joe PenkalaJun 15, 2011

Since being named head coach at Oregon, Chip Kelly has preached the idea of going as fast as you can at all times. The Oregon offense took this to heart, as their breakneck speed led them to a national championship game appearance.

Unfortunately for the Ducks, cornerback Cliff Harris also took this to heart and was pulled over for going 118 mph in a 65 mph zone. Harris' troubles got worse as he was not only speeding, but also driving with a suspended license.

While on the surface this is not a huge deal and will lead to a traffic fine Harris will have to pay, the real story is in the car he was driving.

Since the incident on Sunday morning, it has come out that the car Harris was driving was rented by a University of Oregon employee. The employee has claimed she did rent the car, but after being paid for the rental, loaned it to a friend and was unaware Harris would drive the car.

The employee stated she can also provide banking receipts that shows the payment for the rental car.

The University of Oregon has already been proactive and said they are looking into the details and will report any violation they find.

For Oregon and the football program, the question now becomes how much smoke can be there before you find the fire? If the allegations check out and everything was on the up and up, Oregon will be fine, but the uneasy feeling Ducks fans have right now is in the unknown.

Today, Kelly and the program stepped forward and made the choice to suspend Harris indefinitely. Assuming nothing else comes from this story, Kelly will likely set goals for Harris to achieve before allowing him back on to his field.

Now Ducks fans have to sit back and wait. The opening week game against LSU will be here soon enough, and odds are Harris will not be a part of it.
