World Transfer Rumours: Premier League Clubs Fight for Lille Forward Gervinho

Christopher AlmerasJun 13, 2011

Reports out of France have Ligue 1 champions Lille obtaining the services of 21-year-old forward Ronny Rodelin from Nantes.

While this signing will not get categorized as one of major interest for most futbol fans, it may signal the imminent signing of Lille star forward Gervinho by one of England’s top clubs, namely Arsenal or Manchester City.

Rodelin is a 6'4" forward who is still a little raw. His size and quickness suggest he could be an excellent player in Lille’s open offense if he continues to develop. The former Nantes player is a possible replacement for Gervinho.

The news of this signing should serve as confirmation that Gervinho is about to leave Lille. Reports have suggested that both Arsenal and Manchester City have had bids accepted by Lille. This leaves the decision up to Gervinho as to his preferred destination.

Once thought to be an Arsenal lock, the higher wages thought to be offered by Manchester City may be persuading him otherwise. In looking at both squads, Gervinho seems to be a better fit for Arsenal’s style of play.

Arsene Wenger has had success with other players from the Ivory Coast in his system. It is not a stretch to see Gervinho fit into City’s scheme of play as his abilities allow him to play in different positions, as well as multiple styles.

The presence of the Toure brothers may also sway him toward the Manchester squad.

Both squads offer Champions League futbol, so the decision boils down to where he feels most comfortable playing.

If Gervinho chooses City, there will definitely be allegations of going for the money, but in today’s sports world, that appears to be the norm and not the exception.

This is boiling down to a showdown between two top teams. Both have deep pockets, but only one has shown the willingness to dig into those pockets.

There are no guarantees these two clubs are the only ones in for the forward. Liverpool could easily jump into the fray, and Tottenham and Newcastle are also keen on the gifted Gervinho.

The only thing we know for sure, is that it appears Lille is moving on without Gervinho, and one of England’s top clubs will be moving on without him as well. Soon everyone will know who it is.
