Kansas City Royals: 5 Other Prospects That Could Be Called Up Soon

Bill RobbinsJun 12, 2011

The Kansas City Royals farm system has received a lot of attention this season, primarily because of their No. 1 ranking that they received from Baseball America back in February.

They have already called up three of their biggest prospects in Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy and Mike Moustakas, with likely many more to come in the near future.

Here are the next five prospects that I think could get a big league call-up for the Royals very soon.

2B Johnny Giavotella

Royals second base prospect Johnny Giavotella has been playing very well at Triple-A Omaha this season.

In 62 games, he is hitting .307 with 22 extra base-hits and 45 runs driven in.

He has also been a force on defense, as he has compiled a .980 fielding percentage for the young season.

I expect Giavotella to get the call in the next few weeks, depending on how well current Royals 2B Chris Getz does at the plate during that time.

OF Lorenzo Cain

Former Brewers prospect Lorenzo Cain came over in a six-player deal that sent All-Star Zack Greinke to Milwaukee back in December.

Many thought that Cain might challenge for the starting center-field position at the beginning of the '11 season, but it just never happened.

Since being demoted to Triple-A Omaha, Cain his hitting .291 with 17 doubles, 27 RBI and six stolen bases for the Storm Chasers.

With the great start that Royals CF Melky Cabrera has enjoyed to begin this season, KC might be looking to trade Melky soon and promote Cain very soon.

1B Clint Robinson

To say that the slugging 1B/DH prospect has dominated minor league pitching this season would be an understatement.

He is hitting .356 with 15 doubles, 17 homers and 50 RBI, all in just 59 games with Triple-A Omaha.

At this rate, it will be hard to keep him down in Omaha, but the Royals might not have any room for him in their lineup at the present time.

I think that the Royals might call him up soon to be the big power hitter that they need coming off their bench.

SS Irving Falu

With the Royals recent demotion of infielder Mike Aviles, suddenly the team doesn't have a back-up to starting shortstop Alcides Escobar on their active roster.

Former Royals draft pick Irving Falu has been playing very well up in Omaha this year, as he is hitting .314 in 40 games with the team.

Falu would provide versatility to the team, as you could plug him into a number of different positions on defense.

I could see the Royals calling him up soon to become a super utility type of player on this team.

OF David Lough

Omaha outfielder David Lough is having an excellent '11 season and is one of the best hitters on the team.

He is hitting over .300 and has 15 doubles to go along with 31 RBI from his right-field position.

Unless KC decides to deal starting RF Jeff Francoeur by next month's trading deadline, Lough doesn't have a chance of taking that spot for the time being.

However, the Royals could easily call him up to be a solid fourth or fifth outfielder or have him take over for Francoeur if the team does decide to trade him in the next few weeks.
