Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Dorial Green-Beckham and 7 Can't-Miss Prospects

Connor KillorenJun 9, 2011

With 10 current commitments in the class of 2012, Notre Dame will be in hot pursuit of more blue-chip talent until national signing day in February.

According to Rivals.com the Irish have already locked up four 4-star recruits thus far.

Brian Kelly and his staff will only add to what figures to be a sterling 2012 recruiting crop.

There are a bevy of prospects on Notre Dame's radar heading into the summer.

Follow along as we track the 10 prospects the Irish would love to reel in.

Dorial Green-Beckham

1 of 7

Dorial Green-Beckham is the nation's most sought-after recruit.

That's common knowledge.

The kid has racked up scholarship offers from basically every school in the country.

It's no wonder he has received so much interest.

He's a 6'6", 220-pound receiver who was clocked at 4.43 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

For a player of his size to clock that fast of a time in the 40-yard dash is amazing.

Rivals.com analyst Mike Farrell gave his take on Green-Beckham a few days prior to signing day 2011.

"He dominates with his body and his strength and he has big hands that snatch the ball out of the air. He's a natural red-zone threat, he can be a possession guy who can move the chains and make tough catches over the middle and along the sidelines and he has that deep threat ability."

D.J. Humphries

2 of 7

One goal for Brian Kelly and his staff is to add depth to the offensive line in the 2012 recruiting cycle.

Their top O-line target is offensive tackle and Charlotte native D.J. Humphries.

He is considered to be a 5-star prospect according to Rivals.com.

Like his fellow 5-star prospects, he has received scholarship offers from most programs.

Humphries has great size, standing 6'5" and weighing in at 265 pounds.

He'll need to add weight to his frame and should accomplish that quickly as he will be an early-enrollee at the school of his choice.

Humphries' coach at Mallard Creek High School, Michael Palmieri, recently gave his take on his star player.

"D.J. is so athletic for a player his size, he's about 6'6", 280 pounds now and he moves so well, gets downfield and he can hit linebackers as easily as defensive linemen. He hasn't given up a sack in two years and is the hardest worker I've ever been around. He does it all and has great God-given talent that he continues to improve with his work ethic. He's easily a 5-star kid. "

Eddie Goldman

3 of 7

Notre Dame senior nose guard Hafis Williams is in his final year of eligibility for the Irish, leaving defensive coordinator Bob Diaco's defense with only two other scholarship nose guards in 2012: Louis Nix and Sean Cwynar.

Brian Kelly needs to bring in a stellar nose guard prospect in the 2012 recruiting cycle to add depth at the position, and he may be on the brink of landing one in Washington D.C. native Eddie Goldman.

Goldman is what many consider to be a "beast", standing 6'4" and weighing in at 304 pounds.

Rivals.com analyst Mike Farrell spoke highly of Goldman back in March.

"Goldman stands out the moment you see him from a physical standpoint. He is just built like a D-I defensive tackle, a slightly bigger version of Marvin Austin when he was coming out. While he lacks Austin's natural athleticism he makes up for it with more brute strength and perhaps a higher ceiling because he's still learning. He has violent and quick hands, plays with good leverage and dominates the man in front of him. He won't do many fancy things, he will simply hold the line of scrimmage against the run, push the pocket against the pass and hustle to the outside. He is much better on the field than in camps despite being impressive in a camp setting as well."

Shaq Thompson

4 of 7

With safety Zeke Motta set to graduate after the 2012 season, the Irish will need a player who can fill that role immediately as well as effectively.

Shaq Thompson would would fit that role perfectly.

Thompson, a Sacramento native, has great size for a safety at 6'2" and 185 pounds.

Adam Gorney of Rivals.com recently weighed in on Thompson's abilities.

"Shaq Thompson played on a team with four players who signed with Pac-10 schools last recruiting cycle and two of them, Viliami Moala and James Sample, were 4-star prospects and Thompson was probably the team's most valuable player. He rushed for 1,882 yards and 25 touchdowns on a team that went 13-1 and probably projects better as a defensive back. Thompson has such an outstanding feel for the game and looks so comfortable playing both sides of the ball. When I saw him against Folsom, which was also loaded with talent, Thompson was far and away the top player on the field."

Noah Spence

5 of 7

A constant theme of Brian Kelly's recruiting strategy is to continue adding speed and depth on the defensive line.

Coach Kelly's staff went out and reeled in the nation's top three defensive ends during the last recruiting cycle.

There's no reason to believe they can't do the same during this cycle, beginning with the recruitment of 5-star defensive end Noah Spence.

The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native is similar in size to current Irish linebacker Ishaq Williams at 6'4" and 245 pounds.

Rivals.com analyst Mike Farrell spoke about Spence's athleticism.

"Spence is an incredible athlete who gets off the snap very quickly, shows great body lean around the edge and is a terror to opposing quarterbacks. He also has a terrific motor and will get back into plays that have been run away from him or past him. He led his team in tackles as a defensive end showing his willingness to hustle and always be around the football. Spence is also strong at the point of attack despite needing to fill out his frame and he's adept at engaging blockers and shedding them at the right moment to make a tackle. His quickness off the ball is matched by his quickness in pursuit."

Nelson Agholor

6 of 7

Versatility is always a great asset for a prospect to possess.

Tampa native Nelson Agholor is very versatile as witnessed by his title as "athlete".

Brian Kelly's system is built for players with large skill sets, so Agholor would be right at home at Notre Dame.

Agholor is expected to play either safety or receiver at the school he chooses.

Scout.com analyst Chad Simmons gave his thoughts about Agholor's versatility.

"Agholor is an athlete with a lot of ability on the field. He is just a natural in the secondary and he could be a ball-hawking safety on the next level. He needs to add weight and muscle and become a little more physical, but he has great ball skills, he breaks on the ball well, and he has a lot of range in the secondary. He is a very fluid athlete that can change direction well and he has great instincts too."

Gunner Kiel

7 of 7

One of the biggest goals of the 2012 recruiting cycle is to add a quarterback and what a better way to do that then by adding a legacy at the position.

Gunner Kiel is the son of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel.

Gunner is considered to be the best quarterback in the 2012 class and is rated as a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com.

Allen Trieu of Scout.com weighed in on the quarterback's outstanding skills.

"Kiel has the size you want in a QB, and can also move and plays with his feet. He's not necessarily a dual threat, but is a tough, effective runner and can buy time with his mobility. He is very accurate, sees the field well and makes excellent decisions. He can make the throws and get the ball into traffic. His arm strength is good, but improvement can still be made to push it to elite. Is smart and a good leader as well."
