NBA Draft 2011: Derrick Williams and the 5 Perfect Fits for Teams

Evan HowardJun 5, 2011

Every team enters the draft with their ideal player in mind.

Once the draft begins, team drafts to fill their weaknesses and in hopes of making the playoffs the following season.

Although many teams are set on certain player, many of those are unproven and a lot of them end up becoming busts.

There are a select amount of freshman NBA players that make an impact immediately and these perfect fits will work like gold.

6. Oklahoma City Thunder: Nikola Mirotic (Serbia)

If there is one thing other than experience that the Oklahoma City Thunder need, it’s a small forward.  With a star at the other four positions on their team, Nikola Mirotic is the perfect fit.

With Kevin Durant being able to play the small and power forward position, Mirotic is perfect because at 6’10’’ he can play both as well.

He has the range to step out and shoot the NBA three as well as putting the ball on the floor and blowing past slower defenders.

If Chris Singleton or Jordan Hamilton somehow falls to the 24th pick then they would be an even better pick; but the most realistic small forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder is Nikola Mirotic.

5. Phoenix Suns: Alec Burks (Colorado)

KANSAS CITY, MO - MARCH 10: Alec Burks #10 of the Colorado Buffaloes moves the ball against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the first half during the first round game of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament at the Sprint Center on March

Steve Nash will be a very happy point guard if the Phoenix Suns draft Alec Burks.

Averaging over 20 points a game at Colorado last season, he proved to NBA scouts that he can light up a scoreboard.

He is a very tall two guard, making it easy for him to the get the shot he wants.  He can drive the lane with ease and Steve Nash can find Alec Burks anywhere on the floor.

I think this a perfect match for the Phoenix Suns at the 13th overall pick in the draft.

4. New York Knicks: Josh Selby (Kansas)

The New York Knicks had a stellar offseason last year and with the right pick in the 2011 draft, the Knicks could become a very dangerous playoff team.

If the Knicks don’t end up acquiring Chris Paul in this offseason, Josh Selby is the perfect man to play the point guard position.

Josh Selby started for Kansas and knows the importance of passing to the productive offensive players on his team.  Playing with Amare and Carmelo this next year would be the perfect fit for Selby.

Chris Paul is obviously the best option, but if the draft comes before the final free agent decisions are made, expect the Knickerbockers to pick Josh Selby.

Kevin Love has to be thrilled at the idea that the Timberwolves have the second overall pick in this year’s draft.

With Michael Beasley helping out Love, the small forward is their weakness.  Johnny Flynn and Wesley Johnson in the backcourt, Derrick Williams could make this team complete.

He stretches the floor very well and is a fantastic defender.  He is a very tough and strong athlete and will help Kevin Love on the offensive and defensive glass.

Derrick Williams is questionably the best player in this year’s draft and he will prove his is worth every cent in his rookie season.

2. Golden State Warriors: Jordan Hamilton (Warrirors)

Although the Warriors have the pieces to contend in the West, Golden State always seems to finish in the lottery part of the draft.

After acquiring David Lee, the Warriors were poised to reach the postseason last year and it didn’t happen.

Jordan Hamilton is the perfect fit at the small forward, giving them another offensive presence in the post and on the perimeter.  Jordan Hamilton will make Monte Ellis pass the ball even more, hopefully improving the shooting percentage of the entire team.

The shot selection will be crucial for the Warriors success since they will soon have three multi-dimensional offensive players.

1. Utah Jazz: Brandon Knight (Kentucky)

The Utah Jazz are in the perfect position to land a phenomenal point guard.  After Deron Williams got traded to Nets, they have been in need of a point guard.

Brandon Knight should still be sitting there at the third pick and he is the perfect fit for the Jazz.  He is a volume shooter, has great range to his jumper and is a natural leader.

He is a tall point guard with great speed making him deadly on the fast break.

Brandon Knight is extremely clutch at the end of games and with the Jazz unable to blowout opponents, he might get the chance to win a couple games on numerous occasions.
