NBA Draft 2011: Grades for All 30 NBA Teams
The NBA draft is now complete, and it did not fail in providing surprising and questionable choices. We break down all 30 teams and grade each team's draft selections based on player value and team needs.
Barring a lockout, each of these players will improve his respective team's roster and hopes for the playoffs.
Atlanta Hawks
1 of 30
Round 2, Pick 48: C Keith Benson, Oakland
Benson is long but lacks strength—a developmental player.
Grade: C
Boston Celtics
2 of 30
Round 1, Pick 27: F JaJuan Johnson, Purdue
Round 2, Pick 55: G E'Twaun Moore, Purdue
Johnson is a solid player who has an all-around game. His teammate, Moore, is a solid guard who is a proven winner.
Grade: B-
Charlotte Bobcats
3 of 30
Round 1, Pick 7: PF Bismack Biyombo, Dem. Rep. of Congo
Round 1, Pick 9: PG Kemba Walker, UConn
Biyombo is a defensive specialist who gives the Bobcats a replacement for Emeka Okafor. Walker is an electric point guard who is tough and a great leader.
Grade: B+
Chicago Bulls
4 of 30
Round 1, Pick 23: F Nikola Mirotic, Serbia
Round 1, Pick 30: F Jimmy Butler, Marquette
Mirotic is a young and talented Euro big man with potential. Butler really improved while at Marquette and could be a good role player. The Bulls got Bulls players.
Grade: B
Cleveland Cavaliers
5 of 30
Round 1, Pick 1: PG Kyrie Irving, Duke
Round 1, Pick 4: F Tristan Thompson, Texas
Round 2, Pick 54: F Milan Macvan, Serbia
The Cavs get the best player in the draft in Irving. Thompson is raw and young. Somewhat of a developmental prospect for Cleveland.
Grade: A-
Dallas Mavericks
6 of 30
Rudy Fernandez, via trade with Portland
Fernandez could be an interesting addition to the Mavs.
Grade: C-
Denver Nuggets
7 of 30
Round 1, Pick 22: PF Kenneth Faried, Morehead State
Round 1, Pick 26: SG/SF Jordan Hamilton, Texas
Despite being undersized, Faried plays with rare tenacity and boundless energy. A great fit in Denver.
Grade: B+
Detroit Pistons
8 of 30
Round 1, Pick 8: G Brandon Knight, Kentucky
Round 2, Pick 33: SF Kyle Singler, Duke
Round 2, Pick 52: PF Vernon Macklin, Florida
Knight is a great value pick for the Pistons and allows them to move Rodney Stuckey back to the 2. Singler is a smart player with solid all-around game. Macklin can be a solid role player.
Grade: B+
Golden State Warriors
9 of 30
Round 1, Pick 11: G Klay Thompson, WSU
Round 2, Pick 39: PF Jeremy Tyler, Israel
Round 2, Pick 44: G Charles Jenkins, Hofstra
Thompson has great range and is solid fundamentally. Another scoring guard for the Warriors. Tyler's road to the NBA has been rocky, but he has athleticism and is hungry for a chance. Jenkins can really score, although he comes from a small school.
Grade: B-
Houston Rockets
10 of 30
PG Jonny Flynn, via trade with Minnesota
Round 1, Pick 14: F Marcus Morris, Kansas
Round 1, Pick 20: PF Donatas Motiejunas, Lithuania
Round 2, Pick 38: SF Chandler Parsons, Florida
Taking Morris at 14 was a good value for Houston. Motiejunas has great potential and is young. He stretches the floor with outside shooting. Parsons is versatile and an excellent passer. He makes his teammates better.
Grade: C+
Indiana Pacers
11 of 30
PG George Hill, via trade with San Antonio Spurs
Grade: B-
Los Angeles Clippers
12 of 30
Round 2, Pick 37: PF Trey Thompkins, Georgia
Round 2, Pick 47: G Travis Leslie, Georgia
Thompkins is an enigma with a great frame and NBA body. He could develop into something special. Leslie is a fantastic athlete who needs refining.
Grade: C
Los Angeles Lakers
13 of 30
Round 2, Pick 41: PG Darius Morris, Michigan
Round 2, Pick 46: SG Andrew Goudelock, College of Charleston
Round 2, Pick 58: PF Chukwudiebere Maduabum, Nigeria
Round 2, Pick 58: PF Ater Majok, Sudan
Morris is raw but put up great numbers at Michigan. Great size for a PG. Goudelock is a scorer. The two foreign picks are head-scratchers—not sure how they fit in.
Grade: C-
Memphis Grizzlies
14 of 30
Round 2, Pick 49: G Josh Selby, Kansas
Selby disappointed at KU but is so young and so physically gifted. A good stash pick for the Grizz.
Grade: B
Miami Heat
15 of 30
Round 1, Pick 28: PG Norris Cole, Cleveland State
Cole tore up the Horizon League and will be a backup in Miami.
Grade: C+
Milwaukee Bucks
16 of 30
Round 1, Pick 19: F Tobias Harris, Tennessee
Round 2, Pick 40: PF Jon Leuer, Wisconsin
Harris is a long athlete who displays versatility. He is solid, but not spectacular. Leuer is long and lanky, with range out to the three-point line.
Grade: B
Minnesota Timberwolves
17 of 30
C Brad Miller, via trade with Houston
Round 1, Pick 2: PF Derrick Williams, Arizona
Round 2, Pick 43: G Malcolm Lee, UCLA
Round 2, Pick 57: F Targuy Ngombo, Qatar
Williams is an inside-out scorer and a centerpiece to build around. Lee can defend multiple positions and will develop as an offensive player.
Grade: B+
New Jersey Nets
18 of 30
Round 1, Pick 25: G Marshon Brooks, Providence
Round 2, Pick 31: F Bojan Bogdanovic, Croatia
Round 2, Pick 36: PF Jordan Williams, Maryland
Brooks can score in bundles but needs work on defense. Williams is a physical body inside and brings great rebounding.
Grade: C
New Orleans Hornets
19 of 30
No picks.
Grade: N/A
New York Knicks
20 of 30
Round 1, Pick 17: G Iman Shumpert, Georgia Tech
Round 2, Pick 45: C Josh Harrellson, Kentucky
Hmmm. Very interesting pick for the Knicks. Shumpert has loads of athleticism and can play defense but seems a pretty good reach at No. 17. Harrellson will provide size and defense down low.
Grade: C-
Oklahoma City Thunder
21 of 30
Round 1, Pick 24: PG Reggie Jackson, Boston College
A scoring point guard who has flown under the radar in the draft. Somewhat of a surprise here, but apparently OKC really likes him.
Grade: C+
Orlando Magic
22 of 30
Round 2, Pick 32: PF Justin Harper, Richmond
Round 2, Pick 53: G DeAndre Liggins, Kentucky
Harper was very productive at Richmond and has a good inside-out game. Liggins could turn into a defensive stopper down the road.
Grade: C+
Philadelphia 76ers
23 of 30
Round 1, Pick 16: C Nikola Vucevic, USC
Round 2, Pick 50: F Lavoy Allen, Temple
Vucevic has a solid all-around game and can be great in pick-and-roll situations. Allen provides physicality off the bench and as a role player.
Grade: B
Phoenix Suns
24 of 30
Round 1, Pick 13: F Markieff Morris, Kansas
Did Phoenix pick the wrong Morris twin? Only time will tell.
Grade: C+
Portland Trail Blazers
25 of 30
Round 1, Pick 21: G Nolan Smith, Duke
Round 2, Pick 51: G Jon Diebler, Ohio State
Smith is a high-character player who can shoot the rock but won't be a star. Same can be said of Diebler.
Grade: C
Sacramento Kings
26 of 30
Round 1, Pick 10: G Jimmer Fredette, BYU
Round 2, Pick 35: SF Tyler Honeycutt, UCLA
Round 2, Pick 60: PG Isaiah Thomas, Washington
We know Jimmer can score, but will he transition well to the NBA? Honeycutt fell in the draft but has loads of potential—a great value in the second round. Thomas brings energy and offense and projects as a role player.
Grade: A-
San Antonio Spurs
27 of 30
Round 1, Pick 15: F Kawhi Leonard, San Diego State
Round 1, Pick 29: G Cory Joseph, Texas
Round 2, Pick 42: F Davis Bertans, Latvia
Round 2, Pick 59: G Adam Hanga, Hungary
Losing George Hill hurts. Leonard is a jack-of-all-trades who can defend multiple positions and hit the offensive glass. A good fit in San Antonio, which needs youth. Joseph is a reach in the first round. Bertans is raw, like most European bigs, but he's got skills. Hanga will be an intriguing prospect in a few years.
Grade: B
Toronto Raptors
28 of 30
Round 1, Pick 5: C Jonas Valanciunas, Lithuania
In somewhat of a surprise pick, the Raptors acquire another European seven-footer via a draft-day deal.
Grade: B
Utah Jazz
29 of 30
Round 1, Pick 3: C Enes Kanter, Turkey
Round 1, Pick 12: G Alec Burks, Colorado
Kanter and Al Jefferson in one frontcourt? That's a lot of muscle down low.
Burks is a crafty scorer, but must improve his outside shooting. Great value at No. 12.
Grade: A
Washington Wizards
30 of 30
Round 1, Pick 6: SF Jan Vesely, Czech Republic
Round 2, Pick 18: SF Chris Singleton, Florida State
Round 2, Pick 34: PG Shelvin Mack, Butler
The Wiz get a super athlete from Europe in Vesely. They also get a defensive guru in Singleton, who has room to improve on offense. Mack is an intriguing player coming from a mid-major program but obviously has big-game experience.
Grade: A
