Liverpool FC and Newcastle United Fire First Shots in Ligue 1 Raid

Christopher AlmerasJun 1, 2011

The infamous words "The British are coming, the British are coming" signaled the beginning of the American Revolution, but it is now Ligue 1 where those words are ringing true.

With the apparent signings of Yohan Cabaye by Newcastle United and Sylvian Marveaux by Liverpool FC, the first shots have been fired in what may be a massive raid on Ligue 1 by English clubs during this summer transfer season. Even though Newcastle and Liverpool appear to have struck first, do not expect them to be the only English clubs acquiring some top-level talent from across the channel.

Cabaye’s deal is reportedly complete, giving Newcastle an experienced addition to their midfield. With his addition, the rumors are circulating that Newcastle have their attention turned to Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro. Adding the diminutive goal scorer to their front line would be a definite upgrade to their current scoring options, but they are facing competition for his signature from Tottenham, Arsenal and PSG.

Liverpool’s deal for Marveaux is apparently imminent, with the winger reportedly checking out the facilities this week. Obtaining the winger on a free transfer is a steal, as the 25-year-old’s skill set will fit in well with the team Kenny Dalglish is putting together for a title run.

Marveaux may be joined at Liverpool by other Ligue 1 regulars Andre Ayew (OM) and Benjamin Moukanjo (Monaco). Ayew has been one of Marseille’s stars this past season and could provide cover for Suarez and Carroll, as well as give another option out wide. Moukandjo is a lesser-known talent who has a lot of untapped potential. A move for him would be at a lower cost that could pan out big if he develops.

Liverpool are also keen on Lille front man Gervinho, but are likely to lose out to Arsenal or Manchester City as the Ivory Coast international will be looking for a Champions League opportunity this coming season.

Other potential dips into France by English clubs include Lyon ace Michel Bastos being tracked by Chelsea and Tottenham. Everton may be interested in Marseille playmaking midfielder Lucho Gonzalez, while Bolton are said to be weighing up a bid for Monaco’s South Korean striker Park Chu-Young. There have been reports of Stoke City scouting Ligue 1 looking to bolster their lineup.

It is apparent Ligue 1 has a huge transfer target resting squarely on its chest. With big names like Hazard, Sakho, Sow, Lloris, Mandanda, Payet and Matuidi also drawing heavy interest, Ligue 1 may be left picking up the pieces after the English teams raid it for many of its treasures, large and small.
