The Top 10 EPL Teams That Can Be Defined in a Song

Mohamed Eldin MasriMay 31, 2011

Sometimes, and you don't even know why, you see a team and start humming a certain song. Other times, you hear a song and remember a certain team, as if that song was created for them.

It's all a bit irrelevant, but in truth, it's also fairly relevant; it's strange, but you could consider that song as a narration of a team or player's history in recent seasons.

In the EPL, this is even more special, considering how almost all its team are different. Every team has a completely different gameplan, and hence, reminds you of a completely different song.

Today, we look at the top 10 EPL teams that can be defined in a single song, and learn their story.

Stoke City: Michael Jackson's "Beat It"

1 of 9

Honorable mention: Kung Fu Fighting

The official rugby team of the EPL, if there was a song that can define Stoke City in a nutshell, it's "Beat It".

Contrary to popular belief, this song was not inspired by Stoke City (although that would've made perfect sense), Tony Pulis' side have caused more injuries than they've scored goals this, or any other season.

However, when playing Stoke, there's something you must keep in mind.

You have to show them that you're really not scared

You're playing with your life this ain't no truth or dare

They kick you and they beat you

They tell you it's fair so beat it

Yes indeed, when it comes to Stoke, no one wants to be defeated.

But you know what the scary part is? Next season, they play in Europe... And with their Karate Kid tactics, they actually have a shot at it.

Aston Villa: Jakobinarina's "I'm a Villain"

2 of 9

Title says it all.

Swansea City FC: The The's "This Is the Day"

3 of 9

The first Welsh team in the history of the EPL, a Welsh team in an English league.

Now, while most fans of football might not really care about Swansea City's promotion to the top flight, this is actually one of the greatest moments in Wales history, and a huge leap forward for them.

Matt Johnson, lead singer of The The said it best;

"

This is the day, your life will surely change

This is the day, when things fall into place.

"

All Swansea city has to do is make sure they survive and remain in the top flight of English Football, and they'll play a crucial role in Wales' progression in the world of football.

It's always a great moment when the underdogs cause an upset, here's hoping Swansea City remains in the EPL for years to come.

Tottenham Hotspurs: The Circus Theme

4 of 9

Note:

Dear Tottenham Fans,

We'd like to apologize in advance, we tried really hard to find a song that fits your team to a T, but it was truly difficult to settle for a certain song.

At first, we thought something cool like Saliva's "Ladies and Gentlemen" would suffice due to your great Champions League run, and follow it by saying that the future is looking bright, but then again the ending of the season for Spurs was anti-climactic to say the least.

We then thought about Rilo Kiley's "You are what you love," but seeing how many people call Spurs by the name of "Spuds", we thought it'd be more of an insult to the fans...

Finally we found it, the "Circus Theme" fits Spurs wonderfully, after all, a team that has Gomez, Crouch, Modric et al can only be given true justice with a song that fits these wonderful misfits perfectly.

Enjoy!

Chelsea FC and Manchester City: Motorhead's "Just Cos You Got the Power"

5 of 9

While usually every team has its own song, Chelsea and Man City have one strong point in common:

They both buy trophies.

Money teams are fast becoming a trend in the world of football, yet despite the fact that Chelsea and Man City have won trophies with money (well, one trophy in the case of City), they are yet to fully win the respect of fans around the world.

Lemmy's words define the bluer sides of London and Manchester quite accurately, most notably in the opening verse of the song:

"

You might be a financial wizard,
With a sack of loot,
But all I see is a slimy lizard,
With an expensive suit,
Go on and run your corporation,
Go on and kiss some a**,
You can buy off half of the nation,
But you can't buy class.

"

And even in the end of the song, the final verse makes a very valid point about money in football:

"

You think that life's just dollars,
run with greed and lust and spite,
But I wasn't born to follow,
Like to get my sleep at night,
Just 'Cos You Got The Power,
That don't mean you got the right.

"

Birmingham City: Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye"

6 of 9

While they technically aren't an EPL team anymore (which is a good thing), Birmingham deserve to be mentioned on the list, after a very mixed season.

Beating Arsenal in the League Cup final (who actually beat themselves), and then relegated to the Championship, Birmingham have been strangely inconsistent this season, despite adding quality players such as Zigic and Hleb to their ranks.

Many fans are happy to see them out of the EPL (especially Aston Villa and Arsenal fans), and so rubbing salt in Birmingham's wounds has never seemed more appropriate than it does now.

Goodbye old chaps, hope you find success in the championship for years to come

Liverpool: Johnny Thunder's "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory"

7 of 9

Honorable mention: Guns N' Roses' "Night Train"

It's been 20 years since Liverpool last won the league title, and they're yet to win the EPL. To make matters worse, they aren't even playing in the Champions League this season, and while they have a great new manager, they still have a squad that isn't good enough, with the exception of a few quality players.

The title is self explanatory, and it makes perfect sense too, Liverpool's fans are living in the past, whether it's the league title from 20 years ago, or the miraculous Champions League heroics in 2005.

But the only lesson Liverpool fans can learn at the moment is one thing;

You can't put your arms around a memory... Don't try.

Manchester United: Tina Turner's "Simply the Best"

8 of 9

While it's hard to admit, but without a doubt, the Red Devils are England's most successful team.

Despite starting the season with a relatively mediocre squad by United's standards, Sir Alex's brilliant tactics proved vital time and again.

Winning their 19th league title, a new English record, and reaching their third Champions League final in four years, Sir Alex is truly the greatest manager on the planet, and only Mourinho can be compared to the Scottish tactician.

Sir Alex and Man U; simply the best.

We saved the best for last, and there was no doubt what song would fit in with the final team in this slideshow.

And the No. 1 team that can be defined in a song is...

Arsenal FC: Jose Gonzalez's "Far Away"

9 of 9
"

Step in front of a runaway train, just to feel alive again

"

It can only be Arsenal, and it can only be Jose Gonzalez's masterpiece, "Far Away".

Considered one of the greatest soundtracks in video game history, the lyrics of this song are something every Arsenal fan can relate to with ease.

It's as if Gonzalez is talking to the Arsenal consortium, from the fans and players, in a verse such as this;

"

Cold wind blows in to the skin

Can't believe the state you're in.

"

And even Wenger can relate to the song, most notably in the second verse

"

Who are you trying to impress?

Steadily creating a mess.

"

It's been six years since Arsenal won a trophy, and if Wenger doesn't change his tactics and his approach, Arsenal will remain trophy-less for a seventh season.

As things stand, one thing's for certain.

Arsenal are indeed, so far away.
