2011 French Open: Top 11 Highlights from the Tournament so Far
The 2011 French Open has been outstanding so far. We have seen upsets, crazy finishes but most importantly, quality tennis.
Sure, there have been players who have played below par, but the field has been solid for the most part.
There have been plenty of highlights from Roland Garros but here are my 11 best.
No 11: Jelena Jankovic and Francesca Shiavone Battle Through Three Sets
1 of 11
These two met in a fourth-round thriller.
Shiavone won the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Shiavone will play Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals.
No: 10 No Americans Left in the Field
2 of 11
Mardy Fish was the last remaining American left in the field. He was eliminated in the third round in straight sets.
He lost to Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
John Isner, Sam Querrey and a host of other men's competitors didn't have a good showing at the 2011 French Open.
Andy Roddick was not able to compete in the open due to a shoulder injury.
No 9: Maria Sharapova Still Alive
3 of 11
Sharapova remains in search of her first ever French Open title.
Match Results
First round: defeated Mirjana Lucic 6-3, 6-0.
Second round: defeated Caroline Garcia 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Third round: defeated Yung-Jan Chan 6-2, 6-3.
Her fourth-round match will be against Agnieszka Radwanska.
No 8: Roger Federer Hasn't Dropped a Set
4 of 11
Federer has yet to drop a set in the French Open.
He has only lost 36 games so far.
He has been flying under the radar because of what Novak Djokovic has done. He could be waiting in the wings for a matchup against his streak.
No 7: Kim Clijsters Upset in Second Round
5 of 11
The second best woman's tennis player lost to Arantxa Rus in the second round.
She lost 6-3, 5-7, 1-6.
With no Williams sister, she may have been a good pick to win the tournament. Instead, she still remains a two-time French Open finalist.
No 6: Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro Delayed by Darkness
6 of 11
This isn't anything new at a major event, but this delay to another day may have been the biggest one in recent memory.
Whether you want to believe it or not, Del Potro seemed to frustrate Djokovic in the second set.
Djokovic was hitting shots that he normally doesn't hit. He was having more unforced errors than usual. He seemed to be in major trouble.
Then came the darkness.
Djokovic came out and poured it on Del Potro to win the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
This delay may or may not have had anything to do with the outcome but we will never know.
If you have ever had a match delayed for any reason you may understand the effect on the outcome.
Some days you feel it, and some days you don't. We may have seen Djokovic have an off day but he caught a break.
No 5: Novak Djokovic Streak Continues
7 of 11
Djokovic has went through four rounds unscathed.
Match Results
First round: defeated Thiemo De Bakker 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
Second round: defeated Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-1, 3-2. Hanescu retired from the match.
Third round: defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Fourth round: defeated Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
He won his 43rd straight match which passed John McEnroe.
No 4: Caroline Wozniacki Upset
8 of 11
It isn't a highlight that Wozniacki was upset just how she was upset. She was dominated by Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets.
She took Wozniacki out 6-1, 6-3 in dominating fashion. She has played at the French Open four times and has yet to win the event.
Wozniacki has yet to win a major event in her career.
She may be one of the prettiest players in the game but I have no idea how she is labeled the best tennis player.
No 4: Fabio Fognini vs. Albert Montanes
9 of 11
It was the fourth round of the Men's tournament and both competitors put on a show worth remembering.
Fognini won the match 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9
He survived five match points and had 103 unforced errors, yet was victorious.
He has never made it to the third round of a final and now he is set to face off against Novak Djokovic. Can his career run continue? I don't think so.
No 2: Roger Federer Breaks Record
10 of 11
Federer recorded his 28th consecutive quarterfinals appearance at a Grand Slam with a victory over Stanislas Wawrinka.
He took the match 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. He has yet to drop a set at the 2011 French Open.
He has only lost 36 games in four matches.
No 1: John Isner Pushes Rafael Nadal to the Limit in Round One
11 of 11
It was an opening round match for the best tennis player in the world. John Isner came in with nothing to lose against Rafael Nadal.
Isner gave Nadal plenty of problems with his length, serve and power. Ultimately, Nadal came out on top in five sets.
Nadal won 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2), 6-2
