Texas Longhorns Insider: Longhorns in the NFL

Bryan DietzlerMay 19, 2011

Have you ever wondered where those former players that once played for your favorite college team ended up? Do you ever wonder where the guys who once graced the field for the Texas Longhorns landed in the NFL? Are they still in the NFL?

The following is a look, by position, at those players currently in the NFL (not including players that were just drafted) that formerly played for the Longhorns.

Offensive Linemen

Lyle Sendlein, C, Arizona Cardinals
Kasey Studdard, G, Houston Texans
Justin Blalock, G ,Atlanta Flacons
Derrick Dockery, G, Washington Redskins
Charlie Tanner, G, New York Jets
Cullen Loeffler, LS, Minnesota Vikings
Tony Hills, OT, Pittsburgh Steelers
Jonathan Scott, OT, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Longhorns may not be well known for producing top-quality offensive linemen, but they have a few in the NFL.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Quan Cosby, Cincinnati Bengals
Jordan Shipley, Cincinnati Bengals
Roy Williams, Dallas Cowboys
Jermichael Finley, Green Bay Packers
David Thomas, New Orleans Saints
Bo Scaife, Tennessee Titans
Limas Sweed, Pittsburgh Steelers

We should look for Shipley to have a good career in Cincinnati after having a nice start to his career there. Williams hasn’t really lived up the hype that he had coming out of college, while Sweed looks like he could be done in Pittsburgh.

Jermichael Finley has had a great career with the Packers even though he ended up missing most of the season with an injury last year.

Running Backs

Cedric Benson, Cincinnati Bengals
Ricky Williams, Miami Dolphins
Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs
Chris Ogbonnaya, Houston Texans
Ahmad Hall, Tennessee Titans

Charles has had a decent career and should continue to be the top rusher for the Chiefs at least for the next two or three seasons.

Williams has probably been the most popular of this group, having had his moments on and off the field, while Cedric Benson, who has had his moments as well, has the potential for continued success in the league.

Colt McCoy, Cleveland Browns
Chris Simms, Tennessee Titans
Vince Young, Tennessee Titans

Young is about to become a player without a team but should land somewhere in the NFL. Simms has been a perpetual backup, while McCoy will get his chance to start for the Browns and hopefully have a solid NFL career.

Defensive Linemen

Shaun Rogers,, New Orleans Saints
Cory Redding, Baltimore Ravens
Frank Okam, Houston Texans
Henry Melton, Chicago Bears
Brian Robinson, Minnesota Vikings
Lamarr Houston, Oakland Raiders
Casey Hampton, Pittsburgh Steelers
Tim Crowder, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Roy Miller, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Longhorns have several solid defensive linemen and a couple that are budding future stars, including Melton and Houston. Look for these two guys and a couple of others to continue growing and learning in the league.

Linebackers

Sergio Kindle, Baltimore Ravens
Roddrick Muckelroy, Cincinnati Bengals
Derrick Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs
Brian Orakpo, Washington Redskins

Orakpo has been the best of this group, while Johnson has the most tenure. Kindle hasn’t even played a down in the NFL yet, while Muckelroy did very well on special teams for the Bengals and may see a larger role this coming season.

Secondary

Aaron Ross, New York Giants
Cedric Griffin, Minnesota Vikings
Quentin Jammer, San Diego Chargers
Nathan Vasher, San Diego Chargers
Tarell Brown, San Francisco 49ers
Michael Huff, Oakland Raiders
Michael Griffin, Tennessee Titans
Earl Thomas, Seattle Seahawks

This is where the Longhorns have excelled in placing players in the NFL. Ross, Jammer, Griffin and even Thomas have had fine careers in the league, while Vasher was a Pro Bowl player at one time.

With Aaron Williams, Curtis Brown and Chykie Brown, the trend of having solid Longhorns secondary players in the NFL will continue.

Richmond McGee, Chicago Bears
Phil Dawson, Cleveland Browns

It’s possible that McGee could be the Bears' starting punter when the season begins. Dawson has been a mainstay in Cleveland.
