Philadelphia Eagles Free Agency: 5 Free Agents the Eagles Should Avoid

Michael MillMay 18, 2011

With the 2011 NFL Draft now in the rear-view mirror, it's time to look ahead to the free-agency period.

With the current lockout lingering, it's still unclear when teams will be able to contact players and begin offseason activities.

If and when everything with the CBA gets worked out, there will be a mad scramble in free agency.

One team expected to make a big splash in the market is the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here are five players who the Eagles should avoid in free agency.

5. Randy Moss

Honestly, I feel almost silly addressing this.

However, after browsing over the forums on the Philadelphia Eagles website, I saw multiple posts with the idea of bringing Randy Moss to Philadelphia.

I have no problem with diva wide receivers. Two of my favorite players in the league are Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco.

What turns me away from Moss is his laziness on the field. Say what you want about the other guys, but they give 100 percent on game day.

Moss is a guy who will fail in the majority of the offenses in the league. The one he could be successful in, he got kicked out of.

Better Addition: WR Plaxico Burress

If people really want a wide receiver with baggage, I'd much rather give Burress a look than Moss.

Burress will be released from prison June 6. The Eagles have proved that their method can work with Vick.

Maybe they can strike gold once again with a player nobody else wants.

4. Vince Young

When moves can finally be made, Kevin Kolb will likely be on his way out of town.

When this happens, the Eagles will be in need of a backup quarterback.

The idea has been thrown around to bring aboard Vince Young, who can sit behind Vick and learn.

The problem with this idea is that Young is already 28 years old. That means under the "Reid Rule," he would only get to play two seasons in Philadelphia.

By the time Vick would be ready to move on, the Eagles would have to go find a different player to take over.

Better Addition: QB Seneca Wallace

The Eagles need a backup quarterback. They aren't looking for the future of the franchise with this addition.

Seneca Wallace has proved to be a solid backup during his time in the league.

Additionally, if Vick were to get injured, the offense could remain with a similar style. Wallace is a scrambling quarterback. The only difference would be that he is right-handed.

3. Albert Haynesworth

There have been talks that Haynesworth will be released from Washington, since the team will likely be unable to trade him.

This sparked some interest among Eagles fans, since Haynesworth's success came primarily under defensive line coach Jim Washburn.

This man has been suspended for stomping on another player's head.

He had arrest warrants issued against him in Tennessee.

He was involved in an accident that left a man partially paralyzed. His Ferrari was exceeding 100 mph when he struck this other man's car.

He is being sued for failing to make payments on a loan.

A stripper claimed in a lawsuit that Haynesworth impregnated her and left her with no financial assistance.

Recently, he was accused of assault during a traffic altercation.

No thanks. Even I have boundaries.

Better Addition: DT Brandon Mebane

Honestly, I like what the Eagles currently have with Patterson, Dixon, Bunkley and Laws.

If they are determined to get more help at the position, Seattle's Brandon Mebane would be a much better option than Haynesworth.

2. Jason Babin

Jason Babin was a Philadelphia Eagle in 2009. He finished the year with 2.5 sacks and 16 total tackles.

Last season Babin went to Tennessee, where he played under Jim Washburn. He registered a career-high 12.5 sacks and became a top defensive end in the league.

Now a free agent, many Eagles fans are interested in getting Babin back in Philadelphia.

Although last year was rather impressive, it's going to be difficult to see Babin become an Eagle. At 30 years old, he will likely be looking for his first good payday as a pro.

There is money that can be spent better elsewhere, so I would have to pass on Babin, even though the idea is intriguing.

Better Addition: DE Charles Johnson

If Eagles fans are really that interested in spending top dollar on a defensive end, there are others on the market that could bring more to the team.

Carolina's Charles Johnson had a fantastic season last year, registering 11.5 sacks. He is also only 24 years old.

However, Carolina will likely re-sign Johnson. He is due to make big money.

1. Nnamdi Asomugha

Don't get the wrong idea. If the Eagles signed Nnamdi Asomugha, I would do back flips.

However, I still strongly question if the move would be in the best interest of the team.

Asomugha is a top three cornerback in the NFL. The addition of him to the team would do wonders, but there are some concerns that come with the idea.

First, Asomugha will be turning 30 in July. He is reaching the end of his career, and it remains a bit unclear how long he will be this dominant.

Also, he is going to cost a lot of money.

He deserves it, but there are other options out there who the Eagles could focus on for a lot less. Those guys are great players as well.

Better Addition: CB Jonathan Joseph

Asomugha is an elite cornerback in the NFL. Jonathan Joseph is a great cornerback.

The Eagles could likely acquire Joseph for less money, and receive three-to-four more years of play out of him than they would from Asomugha.

I can't say I would complain either way, but Joseph may be the better option when looking at things long term.
