2011 NBA Draft Lottery: Cleveland Cavaliers and 5 Teams That Need the Top Pick
The 2011 NBA draft lottery is tonight, and if you're a fan of a team that was absolutely dreadful this season, this is as good as it's going to get for you all season.
That may be sad, but it's also true, and as we near tonight's drawing that will determine the top pick in this summer's draft, it's time to look at the teams that need that selection the most. We are talking about your bottom-feeders. The teams that you saw on the schedule this year and automatically penciled your squad in for a victory.
These are the franchises that need game-changers the most, and inside, we'll be talking about the five most needy teams in basketball.
If you have any thoughts, make sure to leave them in the comments below along with who you want your team to take in the draft.
No. 5: Sacramento Kings
1 of 5
This may be because of what has gone through with ownership and the possibility of the team moving to Anaheim, but I would love to see the Sacramento Kings get the top pick in this year's draft.
It would make a lot of sense for the team to draft Kyrie Irving and team him up with Tyreke Evans in the backcourt to give the Kings a really dynamic duo of guards to attack opposing defenses with. This is a franchise that has the means to make major additions in the offseason, and getting the top pick could really set the tone for the offseason.
I don't think many fans would be too upset if tortured Kings fans got to celebrate the top pick in this year's draft. Those fans did such a great job of showing their support for the team, and they should be rewarded for their efforts.
No. 4: Charlotte Bobcats
2 of 5
Michael Jordan isn't winning Executive of the Year any time soon.
Throughout his career in the front office, Jordan has struggled to put a winning product on the floor, and after trading Gerald Wallace, the face of the franchise, to Portland at the trade deadline, it's time for the Bobcats to try and get a new name in there that can drive ticket and jersey sales and create a buzz around the franchise.
This may be the man who took Kwame Brown with the first-overall selection in Washington, but when you get the top pick, it would be pretty hard to not choose either Kyrie Irving or Derrick Williams with that selection.
The Bobcats need a franchise player and the top pick in the draft.
No. 3: Toronto Raptors
3 of 5
Andrea Bargnani was supposed to be the man in Toronto.
Well, so much for that.
Bargnani has been a continuous disappointment for the Raptors and their fans, and while there are some talented players on the roster, there is no franchise player, which the team lost when Chris Bosh joined LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami.
The Raptors and their fans need something to believe in, and the first-overall selection in the draft could certainly change the fortunes north of the border.
No. 2: Minnesota Timberwolves
4 of 5
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been around since 1989.
Since then, the team has never picked with the first-overall selection. That is a lot of losing and a lot of disappointment at lottery time. Kevin Love is the man right now in Minnesota, and he deserves to have the kind of teammates who can come in and really help change the course of a game.
Right now, he's surrounded by Michael Beasley and a lot of nothing in the lineup, and a player of Love's talents deserves help. But don't worry, Ricky Rubio is coming!
If Minnesota could get the first pick, it would go a long way towards helping the franchise finally move on after trading Kevin Garnett to Boston.
No. 1: Cleveland Cavaliers
5 of 5
There may be no more tortured fanbase in basketball than that of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
This was a franchise that was consistently at the top of the Eastern Conference with LeBron James as the centerpiece, only to watch him bolt from Cleveland on a nationally televised infomercial. It was another kick in the gut for a city that has experienced nothing but decades of them.
Deep down, people want to see Cleveland at least get some glimmer of hope, even if it's for one night, especially after the year those fans have had and the fact that LeBron and the Heat are still playing in the postseason.
If the Cavaliers get the top pick in this year's draft, I don't think we'd see too many fanbases complaining about it.
