Champions League Final: Picking the Manchester United Starting XI vs. Barcelona
Having wrapped up a record 19th league title, Manchester United can now give their full attention to the upcoming Champions League final against Barcelona.
Expect Sir Alex Ferguson to rest several, if not the majority, of his first-choice starting XI for this weekend's Premier League clash with Blackpool.
When it comes to the final at Wembley on May 28th, here's the team I expect him to go with. See if you agree, be interested to hear your opinions...
Goalkeeper: Edwin Van Der Sar
1 of 8
This one isn't even up for debate. Arguably United's best goalkeeper since Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar has the chance to go one better than the great Dane in a United shirt and win a second Champions League final (his third in total).
If it comes down to a penalty shootout, he's got previous experience.
Right-Back: John O'Shea
2 of 8
Rafael da Silva would be the exciting choice, but the Brazilian has only just come back from injury, and it would be something of a surprise if Ferguson didn't go for John O'Shea.
Central Defenders: Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic
3 of 8
No decision to be made here.
Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were the best partnership in Europe in 2008, and with Rio back to fitness, they've looked the genuine article again this season.
Left-Back: Patrice Evra
4 of 8
Another straightforward choice.
Patrice Evra played in the 2008 and 2009 finals, and he'll be there at Wembley. The ideal man to combat Barca's cut-and-thrust on the right flank.
Right Midfield: Antonio Valencia
5 of 8
Valencia has returned from injury to prove himself one of United's most dynamic players this season.
Defensively solid and a potent attacking threat, Valencia is the best option for the right flank.
Central Midfield: Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick
6 of 8
There's been a lot of talk about Darren Fletcher recently, but it's hard to look beyond the pair who schooled Chelsea recently.
Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick bring quality and vision, and their distribution should ensure that when Barcelona give the ball away, they don't get it back too quickly.
Left Midfield: Park Ji-Sung
7 of 8
There's a big case for Nani, but I think Park Ji-Sung should and will get the nod on the left.
The South Korean brings discipline and is another whose neat distribution will be vital as United take on the best passing team in world football.
Strikers: Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez
8 of 8
It's hard to see Ferguson looking beyond the Rooney-Chicharito partnership.
If he truly intends to take the attacking fight to Barcelona, then picking the in-form pair is the only option.
Both players are in confident mood and looking equally as dangerous. Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique could be in for a testing afternoon.
