NBA Draft Lottery 2011: Which Team Has the Most to Gain in This Year's Draft?
The NBA Draft Lottery happens tonight, and with 12 different teams vying to get the top spot in this year's draft, there are opinions coming from every corner of the world when it comes to thing related to the NBA draft.
All day all I have heard is that this year's draft class is exceptionally weak, and has nobody of interest when it comes to a player potentially becoming a franchise player.
While I would have to agree with that sentiment, I can't agree that the draft is weak from head to toe; in fact, I think it is pretty deep with guys that could become role players.
From Brandon Knight of Kentucky all the way down to someone like Nolan Smith or Kyle Singler, there are about 20 people in this year's draft that could easily find themselves as a defensive specialist or spot-up shooter on a good team.
With that, there are many teams looking to improve in this year's draft, whether it be with just acquiring a role player or making a reach on a raw talent type of guy with tons of potential, like Bismack Biyobo from Kenya.
So I'd like to go over some of the teams with the most to gain with their picks in this year's draft really quick for you.
Phoenix Suns
Looking around the internet, the Suns are a hot team when it comes to speculation of a long shot team potentially nabbing the top spot in this year's draft.
The Suns have a .6 percent chance of nabbing the top spot in the lottery, but that doesn't mean it's impossible that they get a top three pick.
Right now the Suns are in a dilemma with what to do with Steve Nash, who has a contract running out at the end of next season, and the number one pick could make the decision for them. If they were to get the top pick, they could draft Kyrie Irving and trade Nash for as much as they could get for the guy, getting a jump on their rebuilding process.
Cleveland Cavaliers
This isn't the draft that is going to put Cleveland back into contention for a playoff spot, and it might not even help them get any better by next season. However, it can lay out the blueprint for what they can do down the line to get back into contention.
If Cleveland were to land a top pick (which is highly likely), they would have at the very least two picks in the top 10 (they could get the first two picks in the draft, but that's probably just my own little pipe dream).
With this draft, a No. 2 pick might be best for Cleveland, as it would probably net them Derrick Williams, allowing them to use their second pick on a point guard, a position that this draft is saturated with.
If they were to end up with Williams and someone like Kemba Walker, first of all I would probably celebrate like many people did when the news came out that Osama bin Laden had been killed, but it would also give them a terrific base to build from.
Whoever gets the third pick
The top two picks are pretty much set in stone at this point, with Irving and Williams going one and two, and No. 3 is pretty well set as well.
Enes Kanter is a terrific talent who would have torn up the NCAA at Kentucky if he weren't deemed ineligible this past season, and possibly could have helped them win a title.
Kanter has had some injury problems in his past, but with the lack of star power in this draft, there's no reason that he shouldn't go third in this draft, as he probably has the highest ceiling of any player in this draft.
Any team will be happy to have Kanter, as he gives them a big, wide body at the very least and a terrific post player with a mid-range jumper for the next decade at the most.
