SEC Football: Only One Coach on the Hot Seat in Stable Conference

Larry BurtonMay 10, 2011

For the SEC to be arguably the most competitive conference in the land of college football, the coaching situation is pretty calm due to all the new hiring and success that's gone on in the last year.

Most Solid - No Heat at All

Certainly Nick Saba and Gene Chizik are safe from any heat due to the national championships that each brought home.

Saban is expected to contend again this year and Chizik if going to be lucky to win eight or nine games in what's going to be a downfall year for Auburn.

Still, Chizik will be gold unless he goes a few seasons without getting them back to 10 wins or more.

Likewise, Dan Mullen could run for Governor in Mississippi and maybe win right now. He has those Mississippi State boys thinking of themselves as a regular bowl team now and they're getting better all the time.

Dan would have to burn an American flag on the 50-yard line while having sex with the University President's daughter to get fired right now.

Fans and faculty are all pleased with the direction that Bobby Petrino is guiding the football fortunes of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Unless he gets a better offer and jumps as is his norm, he'll be there as long as he wants.

Comfortable

Derek Dooley surprised many by rallying the Vols late in the season and getting them to a bowl game. That bought him a comfortable year this year in what is still a major rebuilding mission.

As long as Joker Phillips at Kentucky can win seven games a year and take the fans to a bowl, he will have a comfortable job. The Wildcats are the home of lowered expectations.

Steve Spurrier is like a North Korean dictator, the job is his for life.

Ole Miss and Houston Nutt are comfortable with one another and neither wants to make a change any time soon.

Les Miles is Les Miles and you either love him and think he's a fine coach or mock him as the luckiest stumbling boob to ever win a national title. But one thing is for sure, the LSU brass and fans love him, so unless he goes into a major losing skid, he'll be there as long as he pleases.

Does anyone even care who the head coach at Vanderbilt is? Apparently not. But since he just got the job, whatever his name is is safe for at least five years.

Given the terrible year by Gator standards, Will Muschamp will have at least two years to stop the losses before he would ever feel any heat. Knowing Muschamp, he won't have to worry about that.

Feeling the Heat

Word at Georgia is that another 8-4 season could be Richt's last. With Florida down and South Carolina in quarterback disarray, Georgia will have no better chance to make it back to an SEC title game.

Richt is a nice guy, but you've always heard nice guys finish last. In this case though, he was never last, he was just never first either.
