College Football Predictions: Which RB Will Lead Each BCS Conference in Rushing

Carl StineMay 2, 2011

Running backs are fun to watch.

Especially these guys.

While it seems like there are great individual performances every season that come out of nowhere, but these guys are the ones who will own their conferences.

There are some great backs that did not make this list - Edwin Baker, Knile Davis - but the guys on this list will have the biggest impact at their position of any back int he conference.

Big XII: Cyrus Gray

Contrary to popular belief, Gray is not transferring this season.

He will remain at A&M to team up with Christine Michael as one of the most productive running back tandems in the country.

As seen in the video, Gray has the vision and burst to make big plays every time he touches the ball, and even splitting carries with Michael, he will lead the conference.

Aggie fans should take note, in the three straight games the Aggies list last season, Gray had a combined 11 carries.

That was just prior to Michael's broken leg that sidelined him and allowed Gray to showcase his ability...

Big East: Isaiah Pead

Pead torched Oklahoma for 169 yards on 21 carries, or over eight yards per tote in 2010.

While he only scored six times on the ground, he never lost a fumble, and was an adequate safety valve in the passing game.

While he does not garner the headlines of some others, Pead has the game to make a splash on the national scene in his final season.

He will lead the Big East by a large margin come January...

Pac-12: LaMichael James

James is dynamite out of the backfield.

Check out that first run in the highlights, granted it was against Tennessee, and their defense last season drew a number of comparisons to a leaky sieve.

Not only does he have great hands and superior speed, his vision is just unreal.

It won't even be close out west.

Harris led the ACC in rushing yards per game last season, and there is no reason he should not do it again.

Harris gained 1,243 yards on the year to go with eight touchdowns.

The passing game will be more of a threat for BC this season, and the field will be more open for Harris to make plays on the ground.

SEC: Marcus Lattimore

Yes, Lattimore.

No Richardson, Davis or Dyer at the top of the SEC this season.

South Carolina has a tremendous offensive unit, even without QB Stephen Garcia, and Lattimore will be a big part of their gameplan every week.

Lattimore has tremendous strength, and his penchant for breaking tackles and gaining tough yards will only get better as he gains more experience.

His toughest competition will be Mississippi State's Vick Ballard.

Big 10: Montee Ball

Denard Robinson will lead the conference in rushing for the second consecutive year, but Ball will lead all running backs.

He should step into the hole left by the departed John Clay, and his combined package of strength and speed make him a perfect fit for the Badger's run game.

While he will split carries with the extremely talented James White, the fact that veteran QB Scott Tolzien is gone means that Ball will have plenty of opportunities to show that last season was no fluke...

Independents: Cierre Wood

It's not technically a conference, but Cierre Wood deserves some mention here.

He has had a stellar spring, and looks to be an absolute gamechanger for the Irish.

The only knock on him is his seeming inability to gain big yards after much contact, he just gos down to easily.

If he stays in the weight room, he will be one of the top five backs in the country come fall.
