2011 NFL Mock Draft: Cam Newton and Every Round One Selection

Sean MerrimanApr 28, 2011

1. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: Carolina needs a quarterback, and Cam Newton was the best in all of college football in 2010. Sounds like a done deal to me.

2. Denver Broncos: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama: Dareus has the skill set and versatility to play both defensive tackle and defensive end in Denver's 4-3 system. Those are two spots that Denver is looking to fill, which makes Dareus the ideal pick.

3. Buffalo Bills: Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M: Miller is the top pass rusher in this year's draft class and fills an immediate need for the Bills on the defensive side of the ball.

4. Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia: The Bengals have a ton of questions on the offensive side of the ball, but by drafting Green, they land the top pass-catching talent in this year's draft.

5. Arizona Cardinals: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri: We could certainly see Arizona trade out of this pick, but if they do stay here, they could go with Gabbert or Patrick Peterson. Their need for a quarterback makes it hard to pass up on Gabbert here.

6. Cleveland Browns: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: Second-year quarterback Colt McCoy needs another play-maker on offense. He gets his guy right here in Julio Jones.

7. San Francisco 49ers: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: San Francisco needs immediate help with their secondary, and by selecting Peterson, they get an elite cornerback who has the type of skill level that doesn't come around all that often.

8. Tennessee Titans, Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn: The Titans have a major need at the defensive tackle position, and by selecting Fairley, they take the top interior pass rusher in this year's draft class.

9. Dallas Cowboys: Tyron Smith, OT, USC: The Cowboys want to update their offensive line, and with this pick, they get the top tackle in this year's draft.

10. Washington Redskins: Robert Quinn, DE, UNC: Quinn had to sit out the 2010 season, but he is a freak-of-nature when it comes to pure athleticism. Drafting him here would give Washington the best defensive end duo in all football in three years.

11. Houston Texans: Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri: Houston might try out of this pick and try to move up, but if not, look for them to upgrade that defensive end by selecting Smith, one of the top pass-rushers in the draft.

12. Minnesota Vikings: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College: This is a pick where we could see a trade as well. Minnesota's top need is at quarterback, but this is too early to reach on Jake Locker, which is why the Vikings go with the most NFL ready offensive tackle in this year's draft in Castonzo.

13. Detroit Lions: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska: Cornerback is a huge need for this Detroit team, and by adding Amukamara, Detroit gets a top talent to lead their secondary for the next 10-plus years.

14. St. Louis Rams: Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois: St. Louis has a major need at the defensive tackle position, and Liuget is the best player available at this point at that spot.

15. Miami Dolphins: Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida: Pouncey is an NFL-ready talent and is a guy who could come in and start right away for the Dolphins. We could see Miami try to trade up or down and land a quarterback or running, but if they stay here, Pouncey is their guy.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue: We have heard all along that Jacksonville likes Kerrigan here with this pick, and with his great work ethic, it's hard not to like him.

17. New England Patriots: Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal: The Patriots need a 3-4 defensive end who can fill that void left when Richard Seymour left town. Jordan can be just that guy.

18. San Diego Chargers: Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple: Wilkerson has the perfect mold of a defensive end in the Chargers' 3-4 defensive scheme. This pick makes a whole lot of sense here for San Diego.

19. New York Giants: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin: The Giants would like to upgrade at the offensive tackle position, and waiting for them here could be the Outland Trophy Winner from the 2010 college football season.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson: When healthy, Bowers could be the most dominant defensive lineman in this year's draft class. He does have some injury concerns, but he is far too talented to let slip past this point.

21. Kansas City Chiefs: Brooks Reed, OLB, Arizona: This could be a bit of a reach here, but Reed has a ton of potential and he fills a need at the outsider linebacker position here for the Chiefs.

22. Indianapolis Colts: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado: Solder is a bit of a project right now, but he has a huge frame and should be able to provide some much-needed protection for Peyton Manning in the near future.

23. Philadelphia Eagles: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado: Philadelphia ranked in the lower half of pass defense last year. and by adding Smith, they get a guy who could end up being the best of this cornerback class.

24. New Orleans Saints: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin: Watt is a guy who could go as early as No. 6, but as low as No. 30. Chances are that New Orleans will be licking their chops if Watt falls to them here at No. 24.

25. Seattle Seahawks: Jake Locker, QB, Washington: The Matt Hasselbeck era is coming to an end in Seattle, and by selecting Locker, Seattle gets a guy with a big-time arm and a ton of athleticism for the quarterback position.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State: Baltimore wants to upgrade their defensive line, and in Heyward, they get a natural 3-4 defensive end with the ability to make an impact against the run or pass with his knack for penetration.

27. Atlanta Falcons: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa: The Falcons are likely to go after a 4-3 defensive end with the ability to rush the passer and stop the run. That makes Clayborn an ideal pick here for Atlanta.

28. New England Patriots: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama: New England wants to upgrade their run game, and with this pick, the Patriots get the best running back in the draft who succeed in the biggest games on the biggest stage.

29. Chicago Bears: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State: The Bears desperately need to upgrade at the offensive tackle position. At this point, Sherrod will be the top guy who is left on the board.

30. New York Jets: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA: Ayers is a great athlete who has the versatility to play multiple defensive positions, something that Rex Ryan has to like in a player.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Williams, CB, Texas: The Steelers would like to upgrade at both cornerback and offensive guard. This pick could come down to Williams, Brandon Harris or Danny Watkins. Look for Pittsburgh to go with WIlliams because he has the most potential of the group.

32. Green Bay Packers: Danny Watkins, G, Baylor: In order to repeat as Super Bowl champions, Green Bay must protect Aaron Rodgers and continue to develop their ground game. Selecting Watkins here helps with both.
