College Football: Comparing Every Preseason Top 25 Team To an MLB Club
As spring football practices wrap, many college fans turn their focus on baseball as they wait for fall.
Since this is all most of us have, who do you think each preseason Top 25 team corresponds with in Major League Baseball?
Seriously, this means absolutely nothing, but it’s sort of a fun exercise.
25. Virginia Tech (New York Mets)
1 of 25
Every year both Virginia Tech and the Mets are highly overrated.
24. Georgia (Atlanta Braves)
2 of 25
The Bulldogs have experienced great success, but haven’t reached the pinnacle. The Braves were fortunate enough to get one championship in the 1990s, but many times came up short.
23. West Virginia (Pittsburgh Pirates)
3 of 25
The Mountaineers are the lone Big East representative in the Top 25, which is kind of like playing for the Pirates.
22. Missouri (St. Louis Cardinals)
4 of 25
There’s a law in Missouri. If you live here you must root for the Cardinals. While you’re there you might as well watch a few Mizzou games.
21. Michigan State (Chicago Cubs)
5 of 25
Or course the Spartans are talented, but do you really want to bet on them to win the Big Ten? Maybe next year.
20. Mississippi State (Baltimore Orioles)
6 of 25
Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen is quickly earning a reputation as the best coach in the game. Orioles manager Buck Showalter thinks he’s the best manager in baseball. Just ask him.
19. Auburn (Boston Red Sox)
7 of 25
Allegedly, both teams like to pay large amounts of money in hopes of winning a championship.
18. Texas (Detroit Tigers)
8 of 25
The Longhorns are led by a legendary figure (Mack Brown) in the game, while the Tigers have Jim Leland. Both teams expectations are high, but both will come up short.
17. Florida State (Florida Marlins)
9 of 25
The Seminoles and Marlins both have relatively new coaches and enough talent to keep them in championship conversation.
16. Notre Dame (New York Yankees)
10 of 25
There is no better comparison in college football to the Yankees but the Irish. Do you have a better one?
15. Wisconsin (Milwaukee Brewers)
11 of 25
OK, this is somewhat geographic. Still, it’s a good fit as both the Badgers and Brewers have had some memorable seasons, but outside of Wisconsin very few people even noticed.
14. Arkansas (Toronto Blue Jays)
12 of 25
They both play in the best division, but no one is mistaking them for the upper echelon.
13. Nebraska (Los Angeles Dodgers)
13 of 25
Both teams have storied histories, but it has been awhile since either were truly relevant.
12. Boise State (Kansas City Royals)
14 of 25
The Royals are actually winning this season, while Boise has been winning for a while. However, both do it on a much smaller budget than the rest of the competition.
11. TCU (Texas Rangers)
15 of 25
Playing in the Texas heat doesn’t hurt either of these teams, and both have great leadership that allows them to reach higher levels than the rest of the league believes they can.
10. Florida (San Francisco Giants)
16 of 25
It’s doubtful that Giants ace Tim Lincecum would fit in very well on the preppy campus in Gainesville, but with Will Muschamp and Charlie Weis coaching the Gators anything less than a championship will be a disappointment.
9. Texas A&M (Cincinnati Reds)
17 of 25
Like the Reds, Texas A&M is a legitimate contender that no one really believes will win it all.
8. Stanford (Colorado Rockies)
18 of 25
The Rockies sort of get overlooked despite being very talented, and their manager Jim Tracy dissects the game like a Stanford graduate. Since Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL there are many who are writing off the Cardinal. Much like the Rockies, don’t be surprised when they keep winning.
7. Oklahoma State (Los Angeles Angels)
19 of 25
The Cowboys play second fiddle to the Oklahoma Sooners, similar to how the Angels are relegated to second-class citizens by the Dodgers.
6. South Carolina (Tampa Bay Rays)
20 of 25
Doesn’t Steve Spurrier look like he’d rather be playing golf in Florida instead of coaching in the Palmetto State? Don’t the Rays look like they are playing on a football field? Go with it, really.
5. Ohio State (Cleveland Indians)
21 of 25
Almost all Indians fans are Ohio State fans, and Cleveland is in first-place with a few good players and a bunch of no-names. If the Buckeyes are to be in the running for a championship in 2011, they’ll have to replicate what the Indians are doing.
4. LSU (Chicago White Sox)
22 of 25
Les Miles coaching football is a lot like Ozzie Guillen coaching baseball. They both have championships and no one can figure out how they did it.
3. Alabama (Washington Nationals)
23 of 25
Tuscaloosa is sort of the capital for college football, but the Tide have a much stronger and storied history when looking at the Nationals.
2. Oregon (Oakland A’s)
24 of 25
Flashback to the 1970s and the Athletics had just as many uniform combinations as the Ducks.
1. Oklahoma (Philadelphia Phillies)
25 of 25
Much like the Phillies, the Sooners are loaded in 2011. Both teams are expected to win it all.
