Never Yielding: Why Harvey Updyke and an Auburn Organization Need to Shut Up
Iโve kept my mouth shut this past week over the whole Harvey Updyke incident. I felt at the time that it was getting enough play on national television. What has gotten to me however, is the continuing black eye the state of Alabama (where Iโm from) keeps getting from a national prospective.
Harvey Updykeโs little performance on the Paul Finebaum Show last week didnโt help his image much or the image of the University of Alabama. I listened to part of the interview and thought the old guy sounded sincere until he came out with the โRoll Damn Tideโ statement, which caused ALL hell to break loose again.

Big Ten to Ban NFL Players
Updykeโs apology to the Alabama Nation and not to the Auburn Family, didnโt sit too well with some Auburn folks, but then again what do they expect? The old man basically admitted that he poisoned the trees on Toomerโs Corner to get a RAISE out of Auburn fans, which he did.
But of course some Auburn fans loved it. It gave the University of Alabama a black eye because this guy is seen by the nation as a representative of the Bama fan base; stupid, redneck, and out of control.
What some Auburn fans donโt get is, we are ALLย being painted with an unfair brush that both fans bases are like that.
Perfect example is this new Auburn group called "Never to Yield". I had no idea this even existed until I heard it on the Finebaum Show last week. Apparently, this group is supposed to be inline with stopping all the negative stories about Auburn University.
My question is WHY?! One of the things they are talking about doing is trying to get rid of the Paul Finebaum Show. They kind-of-sorta backed off the idea last week, probably because of the Updyke interview.
But if anybody knows Finebaumโs format, they know he is notorious for switching sides. He was on Cam Newtonโs side for most of last season, I think until his father admitted to pimping the kid out. He was on Nick Sabanโs side the year before last when Alabama was making their national championship run; he is notorious for playing both fan bases.
Why this "Never to Yield" group doesnโt get it is beyond me. Just like Updyke, they arenโt helping their school. They are making Auburn University and their fans look like a bunch of whiners who are being picked on. If they think Finebaum is bad now, wait until the season starts, or if anything comes from the NCAA investigations.
"Never to Yield", please stop. If anything, you are going to make things worse for Auburn fans in an already hellish offseason.
And we wonder why our state is constantly being made fun of? Because of a selective few loud voices that both fan bases continue to let represent us.
