Toronto Maple Leafs: Five Current Players Who Won't Be Around in 2011-12
The Toronto Maple Leafs have begun a long offseason in which many questions that have to be answered.
What will happen with Clarke MacArthur? Will the Leafs finally land that No. 1 center? Is there any chance that will be Brad Richards? Finally, which Toronto Maple Leafs will be shown the door before next season rolls around?
Though the Leafs ended the season on a nice run, they have plenty of key players that could be on their way out. They have a total of six unrestricted free agents in addition to six more restricted free agents, not to mention possible trades.
Who will go? We'll find out in the next few months.
Jean Sebastien Giguere
1 of 5
Contract Status: Unrestricted
2010-11 Season: 33 games played, 11-11-4, .900 SV%, 2.87 GAA
Brought in last season to mentor Jonas Gustavsson, Giguere did just that. This past season however was a disappointment. Missing more than half the season due to a recurring groin injury, Giguere split time with both Gustavsson and James Reimer.
The only chance Giguere has of staying is he takes a massive paycut down from the $7 million he made this past season. Although with his new injury problems, it might be too big a risk to bring him back, even as a backup.
Fredrik Sjostrom
2 of 5
Contract Status: Unrestricted
2010-11 Season: 66 games played, two goals, three assists, five points, -five
Freddy Sjostrom was brought in to improve one of the league's worst penalty kills. Well, after roughly one and a half years in a Leaf uniform, Sjostrom has not done anything to improve it. In fact, with only 10 points in 85 games as a Leaf, Sjostrom has not done much of anything.
I expect him to walk without even being offered a contract.
Brett Lebda
3 of 5
Contract Status: One year remaining at $1,450,000
2010-11 Season: 41 games played, one goal, three assists, four points, -14
One of the most loathed Maple Leafs this past season, Brett Lebda was thought to bring in valuable experience coming from the Detroit Red Wings. What they got was the exact opposite. Playing in only half the Leafs' games this season, Lebda took a back seat to the Leafs young defenseman who clearly outplayed him.
While his play this past season would not attract other teams attention, I expect Lebda and his cap-friendly contract to be shipped off as a sweetener in a bigger deal.
Tim Brent
4 of 5
Contract Status: Unrestricted
2010-11 Season: 79 games played, eight goals, 12 assists, 20 points, -four
One of the surprises on the Leafs this year, Brent has definitely earned a new contract. The one thing that might keep that from happening is what free agents the Leafs go after. With the Leafs needing to re-sign restricted free agents Luke Schenn, Clarke MacArthur, Tyler Bozak, Carl Gunnarsson, and James Reimer, the Leafs cap space this offseason will quickly disappear. If they want to go after Brad Richards and still have some cap room left, Brent might have to be let go.
Jonas Gustavsson
5 of 5
Contract Status: One year remaining at $1,350,00
2010-11 Season: 23 games played, 6-13-2, .890 SV%, 3.29 GAA
It seems just yesterday that we all thought Jonas Gustavsson was the Leafs' savior in the net. Now, after three heart problems that have been dealt with and a whole lot of inconsistency, Gustavsson is now possibly on the outside looking in.
Combining the loss his spot as "Leafs goalie of the future" to James Reimer and the common thought nowadays that the Leafs will sign a veteran goalie this offseason, it is possible, now more than ever, that Gustavsson will be dealt.
Even with his struggles the past two years, "The Monster" still has enough of the "potential" factor that we should still get a good return for him.
