College Football Spring Games: Who's Hurt, Who's Suspended and Other Questions

Carl StineApr 17, 2011

College football's spring practices have been underway for a few weeks now, culminating in spring games for most programs.

While most of these games are just glorified scrimmages and should not be definitive measuring sticks to judge a team's potential, they are a good method to get a feel for depth charts and new offenses.

There have been all kinds of newsworthy happenings at college football practices and spring games across the country, and here you will find a list containing items of note for all 120 teams.

Big Ten

Ohio State -

Of course, the biggest question going into OSU's spring game will be at the positions of the players suspended for tattoo-gate. Will Terrelle Pryor be the starter when he returns?  And who will start while he is gone? Joe Bauserman, Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton are all candidates.

Purdue -

Kicker Carson Wiggs' leg may have been the story of the game. Wiggs knocked home a 67-yarder in an exhibition right before halftime. Purdue has been decimated by injuries this spring, but coach Danny Hope expects to get everyone back in time for the season opener, with the exception of starting RB Rob Bolden. Junior defensive end Eric Mebane looked like a great replacement for stud DE Ryan Kerrigan.

Indiana -

The main story of Indiana's 2011 season will be how well they can replace QB Ben Chappell. Edward Wright Baker made his case on 8-of-10 passing for 82 yards and a TD, while his main competition, Dustyu Kiel, threw two interceptions to go with a pair of TDs and 14-of-27 passing.  Could be a two-QB system for new head coach Kevin Wilson. RB Matt Perez, who missed last season due to injury, had a solid showing, rushing for 46 yards and a score.

Michigan -

Denard Robinson completed only a third of his passes, had one long run and fumbled a few QB/Center exchanges, but Michigan fans should be happy following the spring game. The Wolverine's defense looked ready to take some big steps this season. Redshirt freshman LB Jake Ryan was a force, registering two sacks and an int, while the defense overall looked aggressive and sharp.

Nebraska -

Instead of any sort of clarity at QB, Husker fans have more of a controversy than before. Incumbent starter Taylor Martinez and his challenger Cody Green were outplayed by Brion Carnes, who finished 11-15, and showed great mobility. Fellow freshman Jamal Taylor was the beneficiary of some of Carnes' best passes and showed incredible speed and athleticism for a converted QB.

Northwestern -

The Wildcats' primary concern is finding an apt backup for starting QB Dan Persa. Saturday's game did nothing to clear up the murky waters. Trevor Siemian, Kain Colter and Evan Watkins were all effective, and the 'Cats coaches are repetitious in their persistence that depth charts will not be cleared up until the end of summer.

Penn State -

Nineteen Nittany Lions were not available for this game due to injury, and JoePa wanted to avoid more, so he called the Game 2 plays after halftime due to rain. The first half was highlighted by Matt McGloin's 17-yard TD pass and some tough hitting by the defense.

Iowa -

While the Hawkeyes have made their name playing stout defense, this year's offense looks to be pretty solid. QBs James Vandenberg and A.J. Derby were both solid and made some good decisions, while RB De'Andre Johnson wowed with his cutting ability, while WR Keenan Davis had some great snags. The secondary is going to be solid, showing flashes of great play at times during the Hawk's glorified scrimmage.

Michigan State -

The Spartans have to come up with decent replacements at three offensive line positions. That, coupled with the loss of some stellar linebackers create the biggest gaps in the Spartans starting team.

Wisconsin -

Wisconsin needs to find some help at wide receiver. After Jared Abbrederis and Nick Toon, they don't have much depth at the position. The biggest hole might be on the defensive line, but sophomore Beau Allen may answer some of those in the April 23 game.

Illinois -

Who will replace Mikel LeShoure? The Illini will try out Bud Golden and Jason Ford at the position, and either of them will probably be an apt replacement. On the defensive side of the ball, Ron Zook has a pretty solid secondary but will need to develop a pass rush after the departure of Corey Liguet and Martez Wilson...

Minnesota -

It's been rough for Minnesota and new head coach Jerry Kill hopes to turn things around. The Gophers need MarQueis Grey to be a big hit at QB, and someone on defense, anyone to show they have the ability to sack the opposing quarterback.

Alabama -

The QB situation remains more than murky at 'Bama. A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims split time on both sides in the spring game, and neither distanced himself from the competition. The Tide have three safeties, Mark Barron (pectoral), Jarrick Williams (shoulder) and Nick Perry (shoulder) who played in black no-contact jerseys for the defense, and Barron had a 96-yard yard touchdown off of a fumble, and another fumble recovery.

Arkansas -

Tyler Wilson seems to be the heir apparent at QB, and he distanced himself from Brandon Mitchell in the Red-White game. With running back Broderick Green out for the season, the Hogs need to find someone to split carries with Knile Davis. On the plus side, Arkansas may have the most talented WRs in the SEC.

Auburn -

Auburn is yet another school in the midst of a QB controversy. However, Gene Chizik made it clear the teams spring game should not be a measuring stick to judge QB play between Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley. On a down note, the Tigers had only about 50 scholarship players right now after five guys got kicked off the team following arrests.

Florida -

You can sum up the Gators' woes in spring practice in the immortal words of Charlie Weis following the spring game: "The good thing is no one got hurt." QB John Brantley showed minimal improvement in spring practice, and is definitely not going to "wow" anyone with his skill. The Gators are also looking to D-linemen Ronald Powell and Shariff Floyd to step up now that three starters have gone.

Georgia -

Georgia has been hard hit by injuries, with key starters such as Washaun Ealey, Bacarri Rambo, Sanders Commings and Brandon Boykins all sitting out the spring game. Aaron Murray was as sharp as could be expected, and the defense looked solid.

LSU -

The biggest new for LSU this spring is that Jordan Jefferson looked improved and all but sewed up the starting QB spot in the spring game. Hopefully, having this controversy out of the way will help LSU as they begin to focus on a date with the Oregon Ducks next fall.

South Carolina -

South Carolina has QB controversy of the worst kind. Starting QB Stephen Garcia has been suspended indefinitely. With Garcia out for the immediate foreseeable future,
Connor Shaw has stepped up his game. With RB Marcus Lattimore and WR Alshon Jeffrey, the Gamecocks will have one of the best offenses in the country next season.

Mississippi State -

The Bulldogs have a dynamic pair in QB Chris Relf and RB Vick Ballard. On the defensive side of the ball, redshirt freshman Ferlando Bohanna looks primed to fill part of the hole left by the departure of LBs Chris White and K.J. Wright.

Ole Miss -

Barry Brunetti didn't really impress in trying to earn the starting job during the spring game. Brunetti threw two TD's but finished the game with five turnovers. His competition, Randall Mackey completed 9-of-18 for 151 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Tennessee -

Predicted starter started off the spring game 0-of-8, and his team lost 24-7.The quarterback situation is looking good in upcoming years for the Vols, as freshman Justin Worley showed some incredible arm strength during his time on the field. DE Jacques Smith suffered an undisclosed foot injury on Wednesday, and could be out until June after having a great spring.

Vanderbilt -

Larry Smith seems to be the leading candidate in the QB race, but head coach James Franklin will not release a depth chart until late in the summer

Kentucky -

The 'Cats spring game is not until 4/23, but they know what they need to address heading into the season. Morgan Newton has made some progress this spring, at least enough to please head coach Joker Phillips. WR La'Rod King, on the other hand, needs to step up for the Wildcats to have any success going forward.

Pac-12

7 of 21

Colorado -

The Buffs offense looked great in the spring game, and QB Tyler Hansen looked sharp throughout. Too bad the defense was missing 12 guys due to injury. Colorado should be encouraged by Hansen's play regardless. He looks much more comfortable in the pocket and less prone to scramble at the drop of a hat than he has in the past.

Stanford -

Stanford needs some pass catchers. Explosive receiver Chris Owusu is still out with a knee injury, and the Cardinal coaching staff cannot count on his durability. On the bright side, they have a pretty decent QB, along with a great corps of tight ends...

Utah -

RB Harvey Langi has made some strides and showed off some powerful running int he spring game, while WR Dexter Ransom had four catches for 57 yards and a TD. Kyle Whittingham only had seven offensive linemen available for the spring game due to injury...

USC -

Matt Barkley to Robert Woods should scare the rest of the Pac-12. Woods has played all three WR positions this spring and had a good grasp on all of them. DE Nick Perry has picked up his game, while redshirt freshman George Uko continues to impress.

Pac-12: Continued

Arizona -

The Wildcats have a great offense, especially if QB Nick Foles can take the next step in his progression. On defense, the biggest question will be at DE following the departure of their top four guys at that position. Also of note, starting safety Adam Hall suffered a torn ACL in spring practice.

Washington State -

While QB Jeff Tuel and WR Marquess Wilson appear poised for big years, watch out for RB Rickey Galvin, he's explosive. The Cougars made it through the spring relatively unscathed by injury and seem to be progressing out of the Pac-12 cellar.

UCLA -

Safety Tony Dye's knee injury was just a mild sprain, to the relief of Bruins fans. Also, offensive lineman, Jeff Baca broke his ankle but is expected back by August. The Bruins have seen some improvement in the play of QB Richard Brehaut and should be excited for the future with QB Brett Hundley.

Cal -

Brock Mansion, Zach Maynard and Allan Bridgford continue to battle it out for the starting QB spot, while the defense looks to be improved from least season, and RB Mike Manuel has opened some eyes with solid performances.

Pac-12: Continued

9 of 21

Washington -

Nick Montana and Keith Price are neck-and-neck in the race for QB, while the defense has been fairly dominant this spring. It's difficult, however, to determine if this is due to the weakness of the O-Line, which touts four guys who were in high school last spring or to the defense's improvement...

Oregon -

Oregon endured a scare last week when big play threat WR Josh Huff went down with a knee injury. The good news is that it was just a strain, and he will be back.  On the defensive line, three All-Stars, Kenny Rowe, Brandon Bair and Zac Clark, are gone. DE Terrell Turner is the lone returning starter, while Brandon Hanna, Taylor Hart, Ricky Heimuli and Dion Jordan, who’ll all be looking to win a job along the line.

Arizona State -

ASU lost senior CB Omar Bolden to a torn ACLand he could miss the entire season. Injuries notwithstanding, the Sun Devils looked good this spring, showing an explosive offense and stingy defense. QB Brock Osweiler will be great in the pocket and has the ability to extend plays with his legs.

Oregon State -

Terron Wood looks good to take over at RB for Jacquizz Rodgers, but the Beavers need some pass catchers for QB Ryan Katz to toss the ball too; somebody needs to step up in case James Rodgers does not come back from his injury. The defense is quicker then last season, particularly along the defensive line.

Big 12

10 of 21

Baylor -

Baylor is set at WR, where it seems they have more talent than they can possibly use. Robert Griffin was fantastic in the spring game, throwing for 266 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears are still looking for a replacement for RB Jay Finley.

Iowa State -

The Big 12's leading tackler, Jake Knott, will be out until August with a broken ulna. The Cyclones have four guys vying for the QB position but have explosive receivers Darius Reynolds and Aaron Horne to throw the ball too and Shontrelle Jackson to make plays in the run game.

Missouri -

Both Tyker Gabbert and James Franklin have spent time atop the depth chart this spring, and this battle will probably continue late into the fall. The Tigers look very solid on defense, much improved from past seasons. Tight end Michael Egnew will be back soon, along with WR T.J. Moe.

Oklahoma -

No one on the OU coaching staff will commit to an RB replacement for the departed Demarco Murray. In Saturday's spring game, sophomore Brennan Clay had 59 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and walk-on Dominique Whaley broke a 45-yard run and had 10 carries for 65 yards.

Kansas -

WR DJ Beshears has made strides this spring and is an explosive option for Jordan Webb or Quinn Mecham. The Jayhawks defense has been winning the battles in scrimmages lately and have ratcheted up the intensity...

Big 12: Continued

11 of 21

Oklahoma State -

The 'Pokes had a great spring, and the spring game showed some of what they have learned. While the offense is definitely going to be explosive, WR Justin Blackmon won't be the lone receiving star for OSU. On the defensive side of the ball, Big 12 defensive freshman player of the year LB Shaun Lewis showed again his knack for big plays...

Texas -

On the defensive side of the ball, converted from tackle DE Alex Okafor looks like a monster and showed some incredible quickness off of the end. Offensively, Mack Brown is in the middle of a mess at QB. Garett Gilbert was less than impressive in the spring game and all through spring practice, while Case McCoy made play after play. Brown will not make a decision until the fall on his starter.

Texas A&M -

The only major area of concern for the Aggies seems to be special teams. In the spring game on 4/16, special teams had a few plays that made head coach Mike Sherman wince, including a missed PAT. That being said, they have 18 returning starters, and the return of RB Christine Michael from injury leaves the Aggies with one of the best RB duos in the country in Michael and Cyrus Gray.

Texas Tech -

The Tech secondary had both Jarvis Phillips and Urell Johnson out and recovering from shoulder surgery during part of spring practice, but they will be big contributors in the fall. Seth Doege is the clear starting QB at this point, and the Raiders are absolutely stacked at RB.

Kansas State -

The Wildcats spring game is next week, but some of their questions won't be answered until fall. The Wildcats need three new starters on the offensive line, anyone who can tackle and stuff the run on defense, and Collin Klein to turn into a solid quarterback.

ACC

12 of 21

Boston College -

QB Chase Rettig seems more comfortable than in the past and looks good heading into the summer. TE Lars Anderson made quite an impression in the spring game, with seven catches for 78 yards.

Clemson -

Projected starting RB Andre Ellington is out, but expected back for the season. Freshman DE Corey Crawford has been a monster all spring. The big story, however, is the new fast-paced offense.

Duke -

David Cutcliffe has some young talent at Duke, but they are still a long way from respectable. The defense has been decimated by injuries this spring, particularly at LB and in the secondary. The good news for the Blue Devils, is that Sean Renfree is back from injury and ready to take over the reins of the offense in 2011.

Florida State -

FSU is dinged up on offense, and it showed in the spring game. The 'Noles defensive line, led by Cameron Erving and Tank Carradine is going to be dominant this season. QB EJ Manuel seems to have improved his arm strength but still needs work on his deep touch. he has also bulked up and the expectation is that he will be asked to run the ball at times this season.

Miami -

No clear-cut starter yet at QB for new head coach Al Golden. It's clear that a new emphasis will be placed on the run game, and Lamar Miller looked particularly explosive in the spring game, scoring from 70, 64 and three yards out. WRs Travis Benjamin, Aldarius Johnson and LaRon Byrd all missed most of the game due to injuries, and their return later in the year may bolster a less-than-stellar passing game. Stephen Morris and Jacory Harris each threw two picks in the spring game.

Georgia Tech -

Quarterbacks Tevin Washington and Synjyn Days continue to battle each other for the starting spot, while coach Paul Johnson has questioned the drive of the O-Line. In the secondary, there is a mob of guys competing for positions, and no real clarity as yet. Tech's spring game is 4/23.

ACC: Continued

13 of 21

North Carolina -

DT Sylvester Williams stood out in the Tar Heels spring game, along with DE Quinton Coples. QB Bryn Renner was a solid 9-of-13 for 126 and a TD in what could be loosely termed a spring game. RB Ryan Houston, who was expected to start next season, had surgery on his shoulder and is expected to miss four months...

North Carolina State -

Mike Glennon looks prepared to take over the offense for the departed Russell Wilson. He completed 21-of-40 attempts in the Wolfpack's spring game. The defense is headed in the right directions, and head coach Tom O'Brien seemed to be pleased with his team's spring overall.

Virginia -

Probably David Watford is going to get the nod at quarterback here, simply because a less mobile quarterback would become mincemeat due to the absolutely atrocious offensive line. Kris Burd and Tim Smith are sitting out the entire spring while each of them recovers from foot surgery. Matt Snyder missed the spring game after suffering an injury this spring that had him on crutches during the scrimmage. Bobby Smith also sat out the scrimmage due to an injury. All of these guys are WRs.

Virginia Tech -

RB David Wilson and QB Logan Thomas are rarin' to go for the Hokies. Both of these guys are absolute studs at their positions. Starting LB Bruce Taylor is out after arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, but expected back by the time fall ball starts.

Maryland -

Maryland is deep at tight end, with all four guys returning from last season. On defense, coach Randy Edsall has implemented some position switches for Darin Drakeford (Sam LB to Will LB), Demetrius Hartsfield (Will LB to Mike LB) and Kenny Tate (strong Safety to Star). They all seem to be effective thus far. LT Justin Gilbert, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, is out again until at least October with a knee injury.

Wake Forest -

RB Josh Harris and the defense are bright spots, QB is a ? and the Demon Deacons solved none of their problems this spring. It's a question of whether the defense is improved or the offense is just atrocious...

Big East

14 of 21

Cincinatti -

Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, still battling a hamstring injury did not see much playing time, while DT Derek Wolfe and DE Walter Stewart have both shown marked improvement for a team that needs help ont he defensive side of the ball. RB Isaiah Pead could be the best back in the conference this season.

UConn -

New head coach Paul Pasqualoni cannot be happy with his QB situation.UConn quarterbacks were a combined 11-for-39 in the spring game with three interceptions—two of which were returned for TDs. The defense was obviously the star of the game, and they do look solid but probably won't look as good against the likes of WVU and Cinci...

Louisville -

Will Stein seems to be comfortably in the driver's seat at the QB position, with Teddy Bridgewater pushing him. RB Victor Anderson is back to his pre-injury 2008 form, and the emergence of tight end Josh Chichester, combined with the play of Stephon Ball and Chris White should make up for the loss of Cameron Graham's production. The Cardinals played their spring game with all four defensive line starters out due to injury, but they were still pretty solid.

West Virginia -

Senior WR Brad Starks is out until August after surgery to his right shoulder, but barring any unforseen complications, should be the Mountaineers' biggest deep threat. WR Ivan McCartney has been impressive thus far, and Geno Smith and co. seem to be getting a handle on new O-coordinator Dana Holgorsen's system.

Big East: Continued

15 of 21

Pitt -

Pitt has converted to using the hurry up offense under new coach Todd Graham. QB Tino Sunseri capped off an excellent spring with a great performance in the spring game and WR Mike Shanahan caught seven passes for 158 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown.

Rutgers -

Head coach Greg Schiano's transformation of DT Scott Vallone into a nose tackle appeared to be working, then Vallone suffered a severe lower leg injury in scrimmage 4/16. CB Jordan Thomas also suffered an injury, lying motionless on the field for almost 15 minutes. He suffered a concussion.

South Florida -

OT Quinterrius Eatmon and RB Darrell Scott performed well in spring practice, and the Bulls have two apt backup QBs should B.J. Daniels go down.

Syracuse -

Starting QB Ryan Nassib and RB Antwon Bailey turned in great performances in the spring game, while it's obvious that the defensive line is going to be stout. On the flip side, the Orange O-Line needs some help.

Independents

16 of 21

Notre Dame -

Beside the QB battle, the big story of the spring game was the play of  DE Aaron Lynch. The freshman spent most of his time playing against first team O-linemen but turned in a productive performance. RB Cierre Wood all but nailed down the starting spot as well. And if you think star WR Michael Floyd is not going to play next fall, get real.

Army -

Rich Ellerson was still concerned with the Black Knights' ability to replace DT Mike Gann. In the spring game, the O-Line manhandled their defensive counterparts.

BYU -

The Cougars ended practice 4/9, and Qb Jake Heaps is the clear cut starter. On the defensive side of the ball, DTs Romney Fuga and Jordan Richardson are still recovering from injury, but Bronco Mendenhall has 18-year-old Travis Tuiloma and USC transfer Hebron Fangupo to fill the gaps and clog the middle.

Navy -

The biggest issue this spring is replacing four seniors in the secondary, including captain Chris Middleton. Tra'ves Bush has the best shot at replacing him and has been solid this spring.

C-USA

17 of 21

Central Florida:

QB Jeff Godfrey was the star of the show in UCF's spring game. 2010's conference freshman of the year completed 18-of-23 passes for 163 yards and rushed for 70 more, including a 38-yard TD run. DE Troy Davis made his case to take over for the departed Bruce Miller with five sacks...

East Carolina:

Defensive linemen Michael Brooks, Marke Powell and Justin Dixon have all returned after missing most of 2010 with injuries. They will help to improve a less than formidable defensive unit.

Houston:

Star QB Case Keenum is out until the fall, so he did not play in the spring game. Linebackers Phillip Stewart and Jon Witten were all over the field, and Witten lead the team with 10 tackles.

Marshall:

QB turned WR Cornelius Jones missed Friday's practice due to family issues but has turned in a solid performance thus far this spring. The Herd is struggling with a long list of injuries that has made any kind of legitimate scrimmage difficult this spring.

Memphis:

Andy Summerlin and Will Gilchrist split time passing the ball for the Tigers, but the story of the spring has been improvement on defense. The defense demonstrated their progress by garnering 11 sacks and 17 TFL and held the offense scoreless until the final half-hour of the two-hour session.

Rice:

RB Jeremy Eddington has consistently shown his home run ability this spring, and will be a huge part of the Owls' offense. QB Taylor McHargue threw for 201 yards and a TD.

SMU:

June Jones has one of the best young QBs in the nation in Kyle Padron, and even though the Mustangs have no spring game, Padron has taken another step forward in spring practice. The Mustangs need to be consistent on defense in order to build off of last season's success.

Southern Miss:

this will be QB Austin Davis' fourth year starting at the position for Southern Miss, and he threw three TD passes in the spring game. Davis and Rb Desmond Johnson seem poised for a run at the C-USA crown next season.

Tulane:

Tulan has implemented FB Kasey Stelly into the offense after using FBs little last season. This has been due to having two TEs injured and another quit the team.

Tulsa:

Rb Damaris Johnson and QB G.J. Kinne were the stars of the Tulsa spring game. The offense won, but head coach Bill Blankenship was pleased with his first team defense and their performance.

UAB:

C-USA is not known for having stout defenses, and UAB is no exception. However, the Blazers have a dangerous QB/WR tandem in Bryan Ellis and Patrick Hearn, and there were big plays all over the field in their spring game.

UTEP:

The Miners have nine returning starters on defense, and look pretty solid heading into there spring game later this month. Offense has a plethora of question marks, especially after the loss of star RB Donald Buckram.

Mid American

18 of 21

Akron:

RB Jawon Chisholm had 14 carries for 124 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the offense, while DE Nico Caponi and S L.T Smith led a stout defensive effort.

Ball State:

Steven Schott and Scott Secor are part of the hottest competition in camp—placekicker. The Cardinals end spring practice next Saturday with their spring game.

Bowling Green:

Bowling Green's sprin game was dominated by defense. “I liked the way our defense came out,”  Clawson said. “I thought we tackled well and rushed the passer well." Mickey Wagner had 12 tackles and 4.5 TFL to lead the defense.

Buffalo:

WR Marcus Rivers lead the White team with nine receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns, as offense took the spotlight in Buffalo's spring game.

Central Michigan:

Head coach Dan Enos is trying to get the Chippewas back to their 11-2 mark of 2009. Enos has emphasized the run game, and that was evident in Friday's spring game. Paris Cotton looks like a guy who can make explosive plays from the RB position.

Eastern Michigan:

Junior QB Alex Gillett has displayed the mobility to extend plays and find receivers, and will be starting in the fall. The move of Bridger Buche from left tackle to guard seems to be working for head coach Ron English.

Kent State:

RB Larry Dawson transferred to KSU from Akron, then ran all over the defense in their spring game. Kent State made a million mistakes drawing penalty flags all over the field, but that is what spring practice is for, right?

Miam-Ohio: Starts March 21. Spring game April 16

The Redhawks have a pretty heated QB battle on their hands between Zac Dysert and Austin Boucher. After the spring game, it looks as if Boucher may have the ever so slight edge, but this will not be put to rest until late in the fall.

Northern Illinois:

The Huskies head into their last week of practice before their spring game ready to go, and offensive coordinator Matt Canada feels like they are experienced and talented. With Chandler Harnish ready to lead again at the QB position, the huskies will have a very potent offense.

Ohio:

QB Tyler Tettleton and TE Zac Clark connected twice in the end zone for scores, and LB Blake Jones had five tackles to lead the defense in the Bobcats' spring game.

Temple:

Mike Gerardi, Chester Stewart, Chris Coyer and Connor Reilly will battle it out until late fall for QB duties. Coyer was held out of the spring game so as not to aggravate a minor hand injury. Talented RB Matt Brown was suspended earlier in the spring, and Bernard Pierce carried the rock only once to allow head coach Steve Addazio to check out other prospects.

Toledo:

Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens are locked in another tight QB battle here, and Dantin had the better performance in the spring game. RB Adonis Thomas will be a force to be reckoned with.

Western Michigan:

According to QB Alex Carder, no one told the QBs they could be hit in this game, but they figured it out fast. Carder was sacked at the beginning of the second quarter, and this served as the "heads up".

Mountain West

19 of 21

Air Force:

DE Ryan Gardner seemed pretty optimistic after the end of Air Force's spring practice sessions. Gardner told reporters he thought the Falcons could go undefeated, and QB chimed in: "That's always the goal. When is it ever a goal to lose a game? We definitely have the talent to do it." Hope springs eternal at spring practice...

Boise State:

Geraldo Hiwat seems to be the guy to try and fill Austin Pettis and Titus Young's shoes, but the rest of the BSU offense did not look that great in the spring game. QB Kellen Moore's numbers were similar to  Denard Robinson's in Michigan's spring game. Down year for the BSU offense?

Colorado State:

The highlight of the Rams' spring so far was late Friday when Urban Meyer visited their indoor practice facility. Meyer was a wide receiver's coach at CSU back in the day. Head coach Steve Fairchild has the Rams working hard to prepare for next Saturday's spring game, especially since he thought this week's scrimmage was the worst he has seen at CSU.

New Mexico:

Mike Locksley needs some wins to keep his job. If ever the Lobos are going to be competitive, this season is that time. The Lobos return 18 starters, and if they can get their QB situation figured out, may have a shot at winning more than one game this season.

San Diego State:

The Aztecs are going to have the most dynamic offense in the conference, with RB Ronnie Hillman and QB Ryan Lindley.

TCU:

It appears as if Casey Pachall has lead in TCU's QB race. The Horned Frogs boast a talented stable of RBs, and the defense is going to be better than last season's. outstanding LB Tank Carder sat out the spring game.

UNLV:

Determining the starting QB is going to have to wait until fall. The Rebels have a battle between Caleb Herring and Sean Reilly, with Herring holding the slight edge according to head coach Bobby Hauck.

Wyoming:

Dave Christensen's big complaint was that his wide receivers were not focusing and dropped too many passes in practice. In the spring game, the 'Pokes put together a solid passing game, in spite of the windy, wet conditions.

Western Athletic

20 of 21

Nevada:

RB Stefphon Jefferson capped off a strong spring with 10 carries for 137 yards and two TDs in the Pack's spring game. The defense dominated most of the game, amassing six sacks,11 TFLs and four QB hurries. Tyler Lantrip was the best QB of the day, completing 8-of-18 passes for 108 yards and a TD to go with a rushing TD.

New Mexico State:

Head coach DeWayne Walker has challenged his team to maintain a high level of intensity all the way through practice until the spring game 4/30. So far, the team has responded in its few practices, and 7-on-7 drills have been particularly entertaining.

Fresno State:

The big focus for Pat Hill's squad this season is on the defensive side of the ball where the Bulldogs struggled to stop anyone in the red zone, allowing opponents to score over 85 percent of the time. In last week's spring game, the defense held the first and second team out of field goal range in situational drills, and with continued emphasis into the fall, this should be a much improved area for the Bulldogs.

Hawaii:

Hawaii is set at QB with Bryant Moniz holding the reins yet again, but the offensive line is under some scrutiny. The five guys who started the Warrior's bowl game last year have all finished their eligibility and the O-Line allowed eight sacks in their final scrimmage of this spring session.

Idaho:

The Vandals scrimmaged 4/16, and the defense seemed to be the bright spot for coach Robb Akey. Senior Michael Cosgrove led the way with two sacks and three TFLs.

La. Tech:

QB Colby Cameron threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns in the spring game, and RB Lennon Creer led all players in receiving yards and rushing yards.

San Jose State:

So far SJSU's spring practices have been about guys adjusting to their first spring football, since many of last year's contributors were incoming freshman who missed last season's spring. Head coach Mike Macintyre has been very clear about his requirements to remain with the team, and guys like linebacker Vince Buhagiar, who received freshman All-American consideration last season are being exposed to the madness for the first time.

Utah State:

The Aggies will scrimmage on Monday and then finish off the spring session with their game on 4/23. The Aggies have been slammed with injuries. Both first strings on offense and defense were without key players, who were held out, notably senior linebackers Bobby Wagner and Kyle Gallagher, along with senior defensive linemen Quinn Garner and Levi Koskan for the defense, while junior running back Robert Turbin for the offense. Senior tight end Kellen Bartlett saw limited action.

Middle Tennessee:

Logan Kilgore seems the choice for starting quarterback at MTSU, and he showed it in the spring game, completing 18-of-26 for 163 yards. DT Patrick McNeil had three-and-a-half TFL.

Arkansas State:

Head coach Hugh Freeze stated after the spring game: "The kicking game was a huge priority. I thought that Brian Davis had a huge week this week, but it will be a battle between he and Bobby Zalud.”

Florida Atl.:

Senior safety Austin Jensen announced he will not play due to injuries suffered in a 2010 car accident. LB Randell Johnson and DT Kevin Cyrille were huge in run stopping this spring, while on the offensive side of the ball, the buzz is about all the talent at TE. Red-shirt freshman Forrest Campbell and Alex Deleon, red-shirt sophomore Nexon Dorvilus and Darian Williams all have been solid this spring.

Florida Int.:

FIU should again lead the conference in rushing, their depth is incredible. In the spring game, the defense pounded the O-Line and punished them relentlessly. The guys that stood out were backup QBs Jake Medlock and Blaine Dalton.

La. Lafayette:

The Ragin' Cajuns had the passing game going in their spring game, and new head coach Mark Hudspeth should be pleased. QB Blaine Gautier has progressed this spring, and his work culminated in a great performance in the spring game.

La. Monroe:

Cody Wells and walk-on Ian McCoig put some pressure on last year's starting QB Kolton Browning, and coach Todd Berry clearly has some decisions to make.

North Texas:

UNT head coach Dan McCarney named Derek Thompson his starting quarterback after a "consistent" showing in the spring game on 4/15. "Derek was consistent, had a good look in his eye, threw the ball well and threw with accuracy, he is clearly our starter going into camp on Aug. 4.”

Troy:

K. D. Edenfield and Luke Barnes are still vying for the starting QB spot, and Edenfield seems to have a leg up. WRs Chip Reeves and Jamel Johnson are ready to go for the Trojans. Both players scored in the T-Day game, while LB Brach Bessant led the defense with seven tackles and a sack.

Western Kentucky:

Dual threat QB Kawaun Jakes was the star of the Hilltoppers' spring game, tossing for 157 yards and two TDs. LB C.J. Odom had a game-high nine tackles in the game.
