2011 NFL Draft: 5 Denver Broncos Trade Scenarios To Consider
A report was posted Tuesday morning by Pro Football Talk and Mike Klis of the Denver Post says the Denver Broncos would "prefer" to trade back somewhere in the top eight picks in the first round to pick up an extra draft choice in the 2011 or 2012 drafts.
As the saying goes, it takes two to tango.
Would the Broncos find a willing trade partner?
It all depends on if the Carolina Panthers draft Auburn quarterback Cam Newton or not.
If Newton is drafted by Carolina the No. 2 pick is valuable to a team who covets Patrick Peterson (CB, LSU), Von Miller (LB, Texas A&M) or even A.J. Green (WR, Georgia).
Here are five trade scenarios John Elway and the Denver Broncos must consider in the weeks leading up to the draft.
Denver Broncos Trade No. 2 Pick to Buffalo Bills
1 of 5
The Bills are said to love outside linebacker Von Miller. But do they love him enough to move up one spot to secure his rights? The Bills are in a position to draft the best available player with No. 3 overall currently.
However, if Denver starts shopping this pick openly they have a good chance of scaring Buffalo into moving up to secure their guy.
Who the Bills would trade up for:
Cam Newton, Von Miller
What the Bills would trade in exchange for No. 2 overall pick:
Buffalo trades No. 3 overall and 2012 second round pick for No. 2 overall in 2011.
Denver Broncos Trade No. 2 Overall to Cincinnati Bengals
2 of 5
The Cincinnati Bengals 2011 draft strategy is to find a quarterback in Round 1 who can replace veteran Carson Palmer, who has requested a trade at the threat of retiring if his demands are not met.
The Bengals could sit back and draft the best quarterback available at No. 4 overall, or they could move up two spots and secure the rights to the best signal-caller available—jumping ahead of Buffalo at No. 3.
Should the Bengals feel confident they can draft a quarterback of the future in the second round they could move up to add Marcell Dareus or Da'Quan Bowers to improve a porous defensive line.
Who the Bengals would trade up for:
Cam Newton, Marcell Dareus, Da'Quan Bowers
What the Bengals would trade in exchange for No. 2 overall pick:
Cincinnati trades No. 4 overall and 2012 first round pick for No. 2 overall in 2011.
Denver Broncos Trade No. 2 Overall to San Francisco 49ers
3 of 5
The San Francisco 49ers seem resigned to drafting a quarterback in Round 2, where they can find Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton or Colin Kaepernick.
The 49ers are also loaded with 12 draft picks in the 2011 class, giving them plenty of ammunition to move up and down the board as they see fit.
In the first round the 49ers would only move up from No. 7 overall to the No. 2 slot for one player: Von Miller of Texas A&M.
Who the 49ers would trade up for:
Von Miller
What the 49ers would trade in exchange for No. 2 overall pick:
San Francisco trades No. 7 overall and 2012 second and third round picks for No. 2 overall in 2011.
Denver Broncos Trade No. 2 Overall to Tennessee Titans
4 of 5
The Tennessee Titans would love to have a chance to draft Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton in the first round. To do so they may have to jump ahead of the Bills, Bengals and 49ers.
It is also possible Tennessee would move up to secure defensive tackle Marcell Dareus.
Who the Titans would trade up for:
Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, Marcell Dareus
What the Titans would trade in exchange for No. 2 overall pick:
Tennessee trades No. 8 overall and 2012 first round and third round picks for No. 2 overall in 2011.
Denver Broncos Trade No. 2 Overall to New England Patriots
5 of 5
Why would the New England Patriots package three draft picks for one?
Because they can.
With nine choices overall and a staggering six picks in the top 92 selections the Patriots can afford to package picks to move up the board as they see fit.
Also, this is a team that went 14-2 last year. The Patriots do not need all nine draft picks to rebuild their roster. New England, more than any other team, is in a position to move up to grab one elite player who can put an end to their Super Bowl drought.
Who the Patriots would trade up for.
Von Miller
What the Patriots would trade in exchange for No. 2 overall pick.
New England trades picks 17, 28 and 33 for No. 2 overall in 2011.
