Liverpool FC: Kenny Dalglish of the '80s vs. Kenny Dalglish of 2011

Shehryar KhanApr 11, 2011

Kenny Dalglish took over the reins at Liverpool FC in January as a caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Replacing the defensive mindset of Roy Hodgson, King Kenny has brought the smiles back on the Anfield faithfuls, as he plans to steer the ship back into European waters, something which looked beyond the horizon during Hodgson's reign.

King Kenny has returned for his second stint at Liverpool.ย In the summer of 1985, he was installed as the club's first-ever player/manager and was already regarded as the King of Anfield.

King Kenny of the '80s

Taking over Liverpool as a player-manager inย 1985-86, Dalglish immediately distinguished himself by winning the League and Cup double in his very first season in chargeโ€”both coming against arch rivals Everton.

His impact on the playing field had been nothing short of sensational and yet, at 34 years of age, he was successful at reproducing his genius on the pitch from the dugout. ย

While his first season in charge wasย instrumentallyย successful, his second ended empty-handed. It was worrying times for the faithfuls, who had just seen their goal-scoring genius Ian Rush transfer to Juventus.ย

But King Kenny had other ideas.ย

In came John Barnes and Peter Beardsley to add to the midseason acquisition of John Aldridge, as the Reds not only set about reclaiming their place at the summit of English football, but also began to play some of the most entertaining football ever seen at Anfield.

Kenny Dalglish of the '80s v. Kenny Dalglish at Present

As things stand, the authorities at Liverpool FC are already in talks with King Kenny to lead the side into next season; Kenny's transfer market activities indicate that he will be the manager come next season.

It is too early to compare the two managers of different eras, but there are someย startling similarities between both eras.

Liverpool then had Ian Rush, their goal-scoring machine who left for Juventus. Similar to Rush, this generation of Liverpool had Fernando Torres, who for odd reasons chose to play in a "bigger club."

Torres' decision to jump off the sinking ship might have been more towards getting Champions League actionโ€”calling Chelsea a bigger club is nothing less than a sensational joke.

Like in 1985, Kenny has started to buy influential players, Andy Caroll from Newcastle and Luiz Suarez from Benfica. He is in the market for wingers to feed Caroll off the wider flanks. He is keen on bringing defenders, to strengthen the defensive cordon.

His managerial style has beenย aggressive, players have performed well under him and he has managed to get the best out of this lot.

Liverpoolย FC's future is in good hands and the three odd months King Kenny has been in charge certainly proves that the man is on the verge of writing another successful script.

The golden man of Liverpool is back to lead this Liverpool side to glory.ย ย ย  ย ย
