LSU Spring Game: What Is the Consensus on the LSU Quarterback Position?

Billy DayApr 9, 2011

Every spring, Coach Les Miles tells us about how Jordan Jefferson has made these major gains in confidence, maturity and understanding of the system.

But every year he seems to exhibit the same problems.

The only difference that I saw from last spring to this spring was that Jefferson at least did not regress, used more of his running ability to get out of bad situations and made better decisions on most plays.

However, I still saw indecisiveness on many of his passes. He probably would have gotten sacked had it been a real game.

After all the dust had settled, I really didn't get the feeling that the LSU quarterback situation was in great shape, with the returning senior Jordan Jefferson continuing to be the director of the offense.

In the first half, it was determined by Chris Fowler and Blackmon to be won by the defense, as the offense was less than spectacular.

Only Spencer Ware and Jakhari Gore had good games and showed they could move the ball on the ground.

Despite all of the great offensive things we heard about Jordan Jefferson—such as his improved passing game with his new confidence and all of the other aspects of the quarterback position—very little of that showed up on game day in front of an ESPN audience.

Even when interviewed at the beginning of the second half, Jefferson seemed to display little of that newfound confidence we have been heard about.

In fact, he seemed surprised when told that Coach Miles complimented him and called him the starter as of now.

To begin the second half, Zack Mettenberger threw a long vertical pass to Kadron Boone for a touchdown that helped give the purple team another six points.

Zack stayed in for another five to six plays, and he looked fairly efficient for a guy that is just learning the system.

However, Jarrett Lee failed to impress at all, as he was in the ground on one pass over the middle and then less than spectacular on the rest of his throws.

Lee at this point does not seem to he threatening anyone. Once Metterberger learns the system and gets more comfortable, he will most certainly take over that position.

No matter how much Les Miles and his staff try to make Jefferson the guy to lead this team, Jefferson still only brings the ability to run and the fact that he has been in the system for three years as reasons to keep him running first on the depth chart.

Under Jefferson, I still see a struggling LSU offense that lacks a real passing game.

Unless changes are made at that position, LSU will again have to be a running team that relies on a good defense and special teams to win.

I have to believe that Jordan Jefferson is only being called the starting quarterback for now, and it is only a matter of time before the LSU coaching staff will be forced to replace him with Zack Mettenberger.

How fast that will happen will depend on how fast Mettenberger can learn the system.

The presence of Jordan Jefferson has forced Coach Miles to do his level best just to maintain a positive attitude for the good of the team and put a good spin on what must be a nerve-racking situation.

You have to believe Coach Miles will be glad to see Jefferson finally leaving after this coming season.

Miles can begin to dig out of a hole and finally make the quarterback position positive and productive for the LSU offense.

Going into the Spring Game, we were all hopeful that all of the great things we were hearing about Jordan Jefferson would be true and our quarterback position would finally be in good hands.

But, in my opinion,  that does not seem to be the case.

All we LSU fans can do is wait for Zack Metternberger to learn the system well enough to assume that position.

It may be into the second or third game of 2011 before Zack is given that chance, but we can all see that the change must come.

We just hope it will be much sooner rather than later.
