2011 NFL Draft: New England Patriots Need To Add Another Running Back

Tony SantorsaApr 9, 2011

The New England Patriots have many needs as they enter the 2011 NFL Draft.

The Patriots need to address their pass rush, offensive line and outside linebacker position. However, one concern may be overlooked by the average fan, and that's the running back position.

The current New England running backs are BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead and Thomas Clayton. That's not going to cut it moving forward.

Green-Ellis is the typical grind-it-out running back and Woodhead is a third-down specialist—the Patriots need an every-down, well-rounded running back.

Granted, Green-Ellis became the first 1,000-yard Patriots rusher since Corey Dillon, but he's not the answer for the future.

Taking a look at the 2011 NFL Draft class, it offers a nice selection of running backs—whether if it's Mark Ingram, Mikel Leshoure, Ryan Williams or Jacquizz Rodgers.

The Patriots currently have nine selections in the draft, and six of those are in the top 92.

I do not see the Patriots drafting a running back in the first round, unless Alabama's Mark Ingram slips all the way to No. 28 overall—which is possible due to Ingram's knee concerns and falling stock.

Assuming Bill Belichick and company will practice their typical draft day antics, completing several trades, the Patriots will set themselves up with multiple mid-round draft picks—a perfect time to find a running back.

I'd strongly advise Belichick to select a running back in the middle of the draft. Virgina Tech's Ryan Williams would be a perfect fit in New England. He has shown major success at the college level at such a young age and he will be presented with ample enough time to develop.

As quarterback Tom Brady ages closer and closer to the end of his career, it's crucial that the Patriots set themselves up with a quality running game. If New England can produce a good running game, it will take much needed pressure off of Brady, and he will likely perform at an even higher level.

The Patriots have several needs as they enter the draft, but adding a running back would be a smart move on Belichick's part—the Patriots must take pressure off of Brady.
