Ryan Callahan Video: See the Rangers Winger Break His Leg Vs. Bruins

There's a Ryan Callahan video that's making the rounds of the sports world today, after the New York Rangers right winger did something even goalies are nervous doing: He got in the way of a Zdeno Chara slapshot.

Chara, a defenseman for the Boston Bruins, has one of the most feared slapshots in the NHL—a howitzer shell that has broken its fair share of boards over the years. 

With 1:40 to play in the third period on Tuesday night and the Rangers clinging to a 4-3 lead, Chara wound up and fired a blast from the top left corner of the offensive zone. Callahan, who has 77 blocks on the year, moved between the puck and goalie Henrik Lundquist, and the puck glanced off his leg. 

Callahan collapsed in a heap on the ice, but eventually got up and finished his shift before leaving the ice. Once he left, the wing would not return and he is now sidelined with a broken leg. 

Yes, you read that right: Callahan's leg was broken by Chara's slapshot, but he still finished his shift. 

Fans and sportscasters love to talk about hockey players being tough and playing through injuries, but this is a bit ridiculous. Callahan played out his shift with a fractured leg, meaning he was probably unable to generate much push off without excruciating pain. 

Callahan's block proved critical to the Rangers in this one, as they held on for a 5-3 win thanks to an empty-net goal shortly after the wing blocked the shot. 

After the game, Chara told reporters that he felt bad for breaking the winger's leg.

"Callahan is a top-six guy, yet he still plays with so much heart and grit," Chara said. "You don't see many guys that throw their bodies around to block shots like that. He plays the game so hard. You have to respect a guy like that. I just hope that he's okay long term."

With the win, the Rangers managed to keep their postseason hopes alive, staying four points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.
