Novak Djokovic isn’t knocking on the door of the No. 1 spot held by Rafael Nadal, but there’s no doubt he’s moved into the neighborhood.
Djokovic’s second straight victory over Nadal in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament moved him to 9,700 points for the year, within 3,170 of Nadal, who once held a lead of more than 5,000.
Perhaps more importantly and equally strange, it left Roger Federer a now “distant” No. 3, trailing Djokovic by nearly 1,200 points.
The rankings also saw happen what has been a foregone conclusion for more than a week—Andy Roddick is no longer the top-ranked American male player in the world.
Roddick’s second-round upset loss at Miami plunged him six spots to No. 15 after he won the event last year. Mardy Fish moved up four spots to No. 11 with his trip to the event’s semifinals—a new career-best—and is just 224 points behind a spot in the top 10.
Outside of Roddick and Fish, most moves inside the top 25 were incremental.
Andy Murray and Robin Soderling switched places. Even though both players were upset early, Soderling had more points to lose.

The women’s top 10 had a more dramatic look than the men’s on Monday following Victoria Azarenka’s win over Maria Sharapova in the Miami final.
Azarenka jumped two spots to tie her career high of No. 6 in the world, and Sharapova returned to familiar territory, jumping four spots to No. 9.
Serena Williams re-entered the top 10 at No. 10. Since she didn’t play at Miami last year, she had no points to lose and moved up as others fell.
Marion Bartoli’s two weeks inside the top 10 ended as she dropped back to No. 12, and injury-riddled Venus Williams plunged from ninth to No. 15.
Surprise semifinalist Andrea Petkovic surged four spots to a career-best No. 19.
