Jim Tressel Suspension: Could Urban Meyer Be Ohio State's Next Head Coach?
Jim Tressel has had a great run at The Ohio State University; seven Big Ten Conference Titles, one National Championship and a plethora of NFL first-rounders—but it appears as though the NCAA allegations surrounding him could ultimately lead to his release from the university.
I have a hard time believing Ohio State will fire Tressel, but if you listen to nearly anyone in the media, they will tell you Ohio State should.
If Tressel is indeed let go, could ex-Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer be next to coach the Buckeyes?
Rumors have begun circulating around the Internet that Meyer recently purchased a house in Columbus, so that must mean he's coming here to coach at Ohio State, right?
Not exactly.
In fact if the rumor is true, and he did purchase a house here in Ohio, that should not be much of a surprise since Meyer did grow up in Toledo and played football at the University of Cincinnati.
Meyer was also an assistant at Ohio State under head coach Earl Bruce and is still good friends with Bruce today. Bruce has even attended Florida Gators games to watch Meyer's team play.
If the coaching job does become available for the Buckeyes, I'm sure Ohio State would contact Meyer to see if he has any interest in coaching his hometown team. I would have to think this would be Meyer's dream coaching job, considering he has such deep roots in Ohio, and that may be what it takes to get him back into coaching.
How ironic it would be if the head coach that dished out Ohio State's most embarrassing loss in school history (2006 National Championship game) became the next coach of the Buckeyes?
