Nut Up, Ohio State President Gordon Gee: Fire Coach Jim Tressel

Adam StangMar 26, 2011

President E. Gordon Gee:

You don't know much about football. You acknowledged that yourself, saying "I don't know enough about the X's and O's of college football,"—before proceeding to insult teams like Boise State and TCU based on the merits of their schedule.

This was laughable, given Ohio State's own weak schedule and TCU's Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin—the only team to beat the Buckeyes in 2010.

However, you excel at your job and were named the best college president in the country by Time magazine in 2009. You earned this distinction in part because of your continued dedication to academics over sports.

In 2003 at Vanderbilt, you even eliminated the athletic department in an effort to get student-athletes involved in more than just sports.

What has changed? At the infamous March 8 press conference, you said Coach Jim Tressel's job was not in jeopardy, and that you were "hoping the coach doesn't dismiss me."

Is this a tacit admission that Tressel, Ohio's highest-paid public employee, is the real boss at Ohio State? Maybe The Ohio State University has really become just a football team.

President Gee, I would like to enlighten you—you are Jim Tressel's boss, not the other way around. If Tressel really did know about Tatgate in April, and lied by pretending he had no prior knowledge, he should be fired.

Not only is this a breach of contract, it is a daily embarrassment to the university. Recently, it became public knowledge that Tressel forwarded the emails to 67-year-old businessman Ted Sarniak, a supposed mentor of QB Terrelle Pryor.

The confidentiality defense that was being offered by Gee, AD Gene Smith and Tressel? It's been shot full of holes.

Buckeye Nation has taken up a strong defense of Tressel, willing to entertain or devise any conspiracy theories that shed him in favorable light.

Buckeye fans are naturally apprehensive of someone else running the program, but it doesn't excuse their hypocritical behavior—had this happened to any other school, especially TSUN, you can bet they would be full of glee and passing moral judgment.

You have to understand, these are people who think excessive practice (Michigan) is worse than withholding information and/or lying (Ohio State).

Regardless of what the fans think, you were appointed President of The Ohio State University to make the right decisions. As time goes by, this increasingly looks like a lose-lose situation.

Take this opportunity to make the statement that Ohio State is first and foremost an academic institution and that no one man is bigger than the university.
