2011 NFL Draft: Pro Day at Alabama Not What It Could Be

Larry BurtonMar 10, 2011

It's not exactly a reporter's dream job to report on pro days at Alabama.

Greg McElroy can't throw, Julio Jones can't catch and Mark Ingram doesn't look good unless he's breaking tackles, which they do at these things.

McElroy's injury to his throwing hand is nothing that should scare off scouts. He got it out of his cast earlier this week, according to tweets on McElroy's Twitter account, but he'll be wearing a brace for at least another two weeks.

Could this hurt his draft status?

It sure doesn't help.

Jones isn't running routes for McElroy or anyone else right now; he's just had foot surgery. But he showed scouts all they needed to see at the combine with his speed and leaping abilities, and this was before the surgery, but not before the injury.

Jones' stock is cemented and he has nothing to worry about.

As for Ingram, his speed doesn't wow you in time trials. You have to see him breaking tackles and dragging defenders to be really impressed with him.

Marcell Dareus has greatly increased his stock with a good combine and should do well enough to go in the first round now.

Overall, though, these are not good days to cover pro days.

It's a light senior class and there aren't that many early departing juniors, so there's really just not that much to report. The fireworks these players will make will happen later in cities all over the United States.
