College Football Rankings: Which School Has the Best Fans in the SEC?

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

There's no question that the SEC is the best conference in the land. Nor is it a surprise that the SEC has the best fans in the country.

Five BCS National Championships in a row proves their dominance. The highest attendance rate in the nation for the 13th consecutive year shows they're above everyone else.

So now we will break down which school has the best fanbase in the South Eastern Conference. As always, these are my opinions and I welcome yours below.

12. Vanderbilt Commodores

1 of 12

The Commodores are the weak spot in the nation's best conference. Their game attendance was only 33,000 this past season, which was dead last in the SEC. Sometimes it appeared as though their opponent had more fans.

They're not a very good football team, so it's hard for the fans to really get into them.

11. Kentucky Wildcats

2 of 12

You know you're not a very good fanbase when a player calls you out. The Wildcats' best player from 2010, Randall Cobb, was not very happy with his fans. He's right, though.

If this list were about the SEC basketball teams, then the Wildcats certainly would be higher, but this is about the teams on the gridiron and Kentucky doesn't compare to its division rivals. The fans care more about basketball and it certainly shows every year. Football is kind of an after thought in the Big Blue Nation.

10. Mississippi State Bulldogs

3 of 12

The Bulldogs are not the top dog in the conference. Football may mean a lot to the fans, but it's nowhere close to some of the other schools in the SEC.

When you don't win that often, the city and fanbase aren't as into the games as much as they would be if you did in fact win.

However, new head coach Dan Mullen is out to change that. The Bulldogs had a strong season in 2010 and with another one in 2011, people will start to take notice.

9. Mississippi Rebels

4 of 12

Let's face it, the Rebels would rather party than watch the game. Of course, just about every SEC school throws great tailgates, but come game time, they head to the stadium and watch the game.

Rebels fans would rather just party. Their average attendance was 55,000, which ranked 10th in the SEC. They've had a few decent years, but once again fell to the way side in 2010. Another bad year looks to be headed their way and I doubt the Rebels are thrilled about it.

8. Arkansas Razorbacks

5 of 12

The Razorbacks have hope for their 2011 season. They have hope every year, but always fall short. Their fans aren't as into the program as much as the other schools in the conference.

Their attendance average was around 68,000 in 2010 and with the loss of their star quarterback, it may not improve in 2011. Times have been hard everywhere in the country and fans don't fork out that much for their team as much as they used to.

7. South Carolina Gamecocks

6 of 12

It takes a lot of guts to spell out "COCKS!" on your body, but South Carolina fans embrace it.

The fanbase doesn't quite stack up to the big boys of the conference, kind of like it is in football. Granted, the Gamecocks won the SEC East in 2010, but their fans are still far short from the bigger and historic programs of the SEC.

Still, you get some credit for writing and loving that you're a cock fan. Go to Williams-Bryce stadium and you'll hear it from everyone—they love being cocks that partake in a game.

6. Tennessee Volunteers

7 of 12

I despise the color orange, as do a lot of people. Let's be honest, it's a hideous color. Tennessee is all about it though, and they love showing it off.

The Vols fans get into opposing team's heads with all that disgusting orange and affect their play. The constant play of "Rocky Top" has been known to drive people crazy. The Vols fans come in at No. 6 because they're passionate fans, but have a sour demeanor about them.

It certainly shows through their players what kind of university they are. The fans were all for the actions of Tyler Bray in their most recent bowl game.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

8 of 12

A year ago, I may have had the Tide at a much better ranking. However, what Al from Dadeville did to the trees at Toomer's Corner was just wrong, and he definitely hurt the fanbase of Alabama.

One man's actions doesn't destroy the Tide's fanbase, but it does put them behind Auburn, which makes one more thing the Tigers are better at than the Tide.

Alabama is a very historic program and they love their football in Tuscaloosa. I mean, this is a school that packs out Bryant Denny Stadium for a spring game. That's love and dedication right there.

4. Auburn Tigers

Tigers fans will relish their National Championship for many years to come, as would any other school. We'll see how they handle life without Cam Newton in 2011 and what kind of fans they become then, if they're not doing so well.

Auburn fans have a weird tradition of throwing toilet paper all over the trees at Toomer's Corner. Traditions are cool and all, but seriously guys, that's just a waste. Somebody has to clean that up too, which is just wrong. Those that roll the trees should come back after they sober up and pick everything up. Just my opinion.

3. Florida Gators

10 of 12

Yes, they do indeed wear jean shorts. Now, not all UF fans are this ridiculous, but deep down in their hearts, they all love the jean shorts (and probably own a pair or two).

Even though some of their fans are a bit trashy, it doesn't take away from the passion they have about the Gators. They'll be screaming "Go Gators!" until they pass out. And the fact that they win just irritates me.

How will the fans react to a year of change? New coaches and a new system could end poorly for the Gators and fans won't be too happy...until they buy a new pair of jorts.

2. Georgia Bulldogs

Yes, I am a Georgia fan, therefore I put them higher than some of you might think. However, I'm a realist and know we aren't quite the top in the SEC when it comes to the fans. Don't lie though, you know if you were writing this, you'd have your favorite as No. 1.

The Bulldog Nation lives and breathes football. Georgia achieved the No. 1 party school ranking largely in part for their tailgating for football. When the game comes around, 92,000 plus fans pack out Sanford Stadium for what sometimes may be a heart breaking loss or a really big win. What matters is that they show up.

Georgia fans show up early and often. They've sold out every game for 10 years in a row now, including this past season, when they finished a weak 6-7. The Bulldogs had two disappointing years in a row, but fans still packed out games and traveled far for their bowl games.

If we picked up our trash more often, then maybe we'd be the best fans in the SEC.

1. LSU Tigers

12 of 12

The Tigers come in at No. 1 because they are loud, passionate and just down right crazy. Football is their life in Baton Rouge and they let you know it. They travel well and the tailgating is outstanding.

LSU fans terrorize their opponents, which is why Tiger Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in, especially at night. If you have to face the Tigers in a night game, more times than not, it will be a loss for you. There's a reason it's called "Death Valley." The atmosphere at LSU is out of this world.

They party hard, eat well and win. What could be better?
