College Football Recruiting 2012: Aaron Crone Likes Boise State and Nevada
Corona Roosevelt (CA) high school quarterback Aaron Crone was arguably the top signal caller on hand at the LA Under Armour combine this past weekend and showed why he's among the top QBs in the state.
We got a chance to chat with Crone and get caught up with his recruitment and also got to talk with him about which offense he thinks he's the best fit for at the collegiate level. A talented gunslinger, Crone fared well at the combine and has become somewhat of an offseason event junkie.
Seeing him over the past weekend was no shock. Come see what all he had to say to Bleacher Report.
Who Is Aaron Crone?
1 of 5
Crone is a 6'0", 190-pound QB prospect from Corona Roosevelt (CA) and among the best in the state of California for the 2012 recruiting crop.
Crone tossed for over 2,300 yards and 23 touchdowns last year as a junior and also hit pay dirt six times with his legs.
He is doing everything he can to improve his game, as Crone has not only gone to the Under Armour Combine but has also been to various QB camps and seven-on-seven throwing sessions and will be at the CAL Elite-11 QB workouts this spring as well.
Aaron Crone Scouting Report
2 of 5
Crone has solid foot speed in climbs from center, he sets up well holding the ball ear-high, scans the field upright and has a quick release and delivery. He understands situations very well and on the fly by showing when to rifle throws and when to loft balls cleanly over defenders.
Crone is athletic enough to escape the rush and gain yards with his legs.
He's not tall, as he's only 6'0", and could have trouble seeing over interior rushers and have traffic in his throwing lanes. He will need to play in an offense that features a moving pocket and allows him to roll out and boot to attack the edges and make throws on the run.
Who's Already Recruiting Crone?
3 of 5
Crone is hearing Boise State, Nevada, Fresno State and Iowa State. He told Bleacher Report, "I think going away for college would be a good thing for me. I'd get a chance to see another part of the US."
He may not be the tallest QB or not be recruited hard by the USCs, Alabamas or Floridas, but Crone has the skill set to be a gamer in college. Remember, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees were not highly sought-after in high school recruiting.
This is why coaching and proper development is so crucial for players and why it should play a big role in a recruit's decision. If Crone gets to a school with proper coaching and develops right, you may be looking at a Kellen Moore-type QB for your program.
What Offense Fits Crone the Best?
4 of 5
"I think I can fit into any offense." says Crone. "I can run the pistol. I can run the spread. I can run the pro-style system. I really don't don't care because I think I can fit and play in any type of offense."
I think Crone can fit in any offense as well, yet the offensive coordinator will have to deal with Crone's lack of height and inconsistency to see over the rush.
A moving pocket will suit him well, and as the Saints do with Drew Brees, having their interior offensive linemen short-set to give Brees, and Crone for this matter, space to see will help.
Crone Feeling Nevada and Boise State?
5 of 5
"Right now, Nevada is really recruiting me the hardest. They seem really interested and I hear from them the most," Crone told Bleacher Report.
He also listed Boise State as a school of interest that he hears from on the regular, along with Fresno State and Iowa State.
Crone would be a great fit in the Wolf Pack's Pistol offense, as he is mobile enough to operate the system, has a solid arm to attack coverage downfield and is accurate enough to make pinpoint throws underneath.
