BYU Basketball: Cougars Take Significant Blow, Brandon Davies Suspended for Year
BYU has always been known for its very, very strict honor code. In a report by ksl.com, Brandon Davies has violated that honor code and will be suspended for the remainder of the 2010-2011 season.
The severity of the punishment, and Davies' eligibility for next season, have yet to be discussed. BYU never discusses what aspect of the Honor Code was broken.
What does this mean for the Cougars?
Davies, a 6'9" forward from Provo, averaged just over 11 points and six rebounds a game. He is BYU's best low post threat, and without him, the Cougars are severely undersized.
BYU lost big-man Chris Collinsworth for the season earlier this year.
Without Collinsworth and Davies, the only big-men left are James Anderson and Noah Hartsock. Anderson will likely see a significant increase in playing time.
Davies leaves a hole in the hearts of many of the BYU faithful. The hope for a deep tournament run could be destroyed by Davies' actions.
Davies is a good big-man; in fact, Steve Kerr said "we could see him in the NBA in a few years."
His size, rebounding and ability to score in the pose will be greatly missed.
Senior guards Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery will have to carry even more of the load than they have all season. Without the low post threat of Davies, these two can expect defenses to key even more on them than they have done all year.
BYU is no stranger to being let down by key players. Football player Harvey Unga was dismissed from the Cougar football team when he broke the honor code, and now Davies has left many Cougar faithful feeling the same way.
