Carmelo Anthony: Why I Don't Give a Damn About the Trade
Before I get a whole bunch of hostile replies guessing that I must be a disgruntled Bulls fan or that I'm a wannabe Kobe Bryant groupie, I'm not.
In reality, I'm not even a big basketball fan. And although I live in New York City, I really don't like the Knicks. And the Nets? Please, other than Jay-Z and about 45 others, does anyone even care about the Nets. I don't think they've been relevant since Jason Kidd left.
1) Although the "Melo trade does greatly improve the Knicks, they are still going to have trouble getting out of the first round in the NBA playoffs. They are currently a six-seed and closer to the back of the pack than the front.
2) Donnie Walsh probably gets most of the credit for the trade, but with his contract expiring this summer and his health in question, will Isiah Thomas be returning to MSG? Owner Charles Dolan has a major Man-Crush on Isiah and don't be surprised to see him return and muck things up again.
3) Its almost baseball season. Spring Training baseball games start in less than three days and the focus will soon be on whether AJ Burnett can be a reliable third starter or if Derek Jeter is an aging .270 hitter or a bonafide .300 hitter.
4) The Mets mess. New York is a 12-month baseball town. Any new allegations or revelations that surface pertaining to the Bernie Madoff Scandal will instantly be back page news.
5) Even in the offseason Rex Ryan can make more headlines than Mike D'Antoni can in-season. Remember last year when the Big Guy got caught on a camera phone flipping the bird? Plus, any big dude that has a foot fetish is always newsworthy.
6) The "other" team that resides at MSG, the Rangers are also fighting for a playoff spot. Currently in the seventh playoff slot, Head Coach John Tortorella's job is in jeopardy if the Blue Shirts go home early in April again. In addition, other than the NY football Giants, Rangers fans are probably some of the most rabid, knowledgeable and loyal in professional sports, let alone NYC.
7) After the fierce winter we had here in the northeast, would you rather be watching a ho-hum Knicks-Pistons game indoors or enjoying the fresh air and sunshine at Yankee Stadium or Citi Field.
8) Defense. Is that a foreign word here?
