College Football 2011: The Nation's 10 Longest Winning Streaks
Winning Streaks can sometimes be the most telling statistic of a team’s dominance in their respective sport.
This concept applies specifically to football mainly because you are only playing one game a week, so the margin for error is very small.
In college football, the margin becomes even smaller due to the importance placed on each game. You could lose your first game of the season and automatically be wiped out of any sort of championship consideration.
The stakes are high, and only the best can make it through a season unscathed.
But only the best of the best can take an undefeated season into the next year, and sometimes further than that.
Here’s a list of the 10 longest winnings streaks in college football history.
10: 28 Games
1 of 10
Alabama: 1991-1993 and 1978-1980
Oklahoma: 1973-1975
Michigan State: 1950-1953
It's no surprise that two of the nation's most storied football schools are present to kick off the list.
And then there is Michigan State...
No, Tom Izzo was not the coach.
9. 29 Games
2 of 10
Miami (FL): 1990-1992
Michigan: 1901-1903
Long before "The U" was known for half of their players being felons, they were known for great football.
8. 30 Games
3 of 10
Texas: 1968-1970
Good football in Texas is more natural to them than the electric chair.
7. 31 Games
4 of 10
Oklahoma: 1948-1950
Penn State: 1896-1898
You might notice a trend of Oklahoma being on this list quite a few times.
To be fair, what else is there to do but play football in Oklahoma?
6. 32 Games
5 of 10
Pittsburgh: 1914-1918
Needless to say, this was before Dave Wannstedt was coaching.
His mustache may have been around though!
5. 34 Games
6 of 10
Miami (FL): 2000-2003
Penn State: 1894-1896
Anybody remember Ken Dorsey?
He really went on to do great things in the NFL...
4. 35 Games
7 of 10
USC: 2003-2005
Toledo: 1969-1971
It felt very awkward putting Toledo and USC on the same slide, but then I remembered that the Trojans were cheaters.
3. 37 Games
8 of 10
Yale: 1887-1889 and 1890-1893
It took me a minute to realize that this record was for their football team and not for Crew.
(Aka sailboat racing, or whatever it is that they do).
2. 39 Games
9 of 10
Washington: 1908-1914
I know, it surprised me, too!
1. 47 Games
10 of 10
Oklahoma: 1953-1957
I have nothing witty to say about this one. It's a rather impressive streak that has stood for a very long time.
Can't touch this.
Stop.
Hammer time.
