Cam Newton: Reports Say QB Will Be a Full NFL Combine Participant

Max C Sconyers JrFeb 22, 2011

Fort Worth, Texas - AP

Cam Newton continues to take his rightful position as not only one of the greatest athletes to ever play college football, but also as one of the brightest examples of great character and perseverance in these days of constant inter-state bitterness.  The poisoning of trees and reputations will continue until some sense of sanity returns to the Heart of Dixie, though the forecast for such a sanity event does not look good.

Monday night Cam received yet another prestigious award for his remarkable performances on the field during Auburn’s 2010 National Championship run.  The Davey O’Brien Award is given every year to the nation’s top college quarterback.  “It is truly an honor to receive the Davey O’Brien Award. I’m very humbled and blessed to have my name associated with Davey O’Brien and all the great players that have won this award.”

Cam continues, “I’ve been fortunate to have outstanding coaches and teammates at Auburn and this would not have been possible without them.”  Newton is Auburn’s first Davey O’Brien winner.

A partial list of Cam Newton’s awards for his and Auburn’s outstanding 2010 football season:

The Heisman, the Walter Camp, Manning and AP Player of the Year, among others this young man has achieved this year.  And he only played one season.  Cam was only the third player in college football history to run for 20 touchdowns and throw for 20 more touchdowns in a single season.  Total rushing for the season was 1,473 while getting those 20 touchdowns, and he threw the ball for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns.  Oh yeah, he also caught a touchdown pass.

A simply remarkable performance on any scale.  51 total touchdowns is an Auburn record and he has rushed for more yards in a single season than any other SEC quarterback, ever.

On another note, Cam also told the AP that he intends to “fully participate” in the NFL Combine which begins tomorrow in Indianapolis.  “I’m going to go out there and do what I’ve been working on this whole time and preparing for this moment right now.”

Cam certainly does not have to go through the NFL Combine to garner the attention of the NFL and will most certainly go high in the draft.  He is also the recipient of a record setting endorsement deal worth over a million dollars a year from Under Armour.  So why does he do the combine?

Because, in Cam, what you see is what you get, a class act.  He was obviously a man among boys this season on the field, and he has consistently proved the same in his character off the field.

While the sharks ate each other with the blood in the water around his father Cecil Newton’s obviously misguided activity, Cam has held his head high, his mouth shut and just simply been the best college football player most people have ever seen.  His father’s discretion takes absolutely nothing away from the fact that his athletic abilities, his poise, his leadership and that fabulous smile are the stuff of legacies just beginning. He was, and simply will be for a long time, the best.  So Cam Newton is going to the NFL Combine because that is what he has done all year.  Not because he has to, but because that’s his job, and he takes nothing for granted.
