College Football: 10 Teams Whose Futures Are Not As Bright As They Think
We all will support our college football teams until the very end of times, and many of us start every year by saying, "This is the year that we are going to bounce back and improve and start building to the future!"
These fans expect their teams to start turning the corner and be a perennial contender in their conference every year.
This is a list of the teams who's fanbases need to take a chill pill and realize that their teams won't be ascending to any throne anytime soon
10. California Golden Bears
1 of 10
In his nine seasons with the Bears, Jeff Tedford has done amazing things. He has taken Cal back into the Pac-10 title hunt and can assure some really good games every year.
The only problem is that, unlike perennial title contenders, California flip-flops too much and loses their identity.
They play well some games and play just awful in others.
While California fans may see these incoming recruiting classes of the past few years as a good thing, don't expect too much out of the Bears in the near future, as the Pac-12 will be hard to navigate through.
9. Arkansas Razorbacks
2 of 10
Arkansas is coming off a few promising years, and that is a big positive in going forward into the future.
However, the SEC is just too tough for a team like Arkansas to compete annually while also playing in the shadow of teams such as Alabama, LSU and Florida.
While Arkansas is a good team that might dominate in other conferences (Big East, cough-cough), the SEC is just too hard for them to pull through as a title contender.
8. Georgia Bulldogs
3 of 10
This is another SEC team pumped off of a great recruiting class who is looking ready to try and make a comeback in their conference.
While many have dubbed their incoming class as the "dream team," college football is a completely different game than high school, and there are bound to be busts within their recruits.
Georgia will eventually be good enough again, but don't look for them to surprise anybody anytime soon.
7. Miami Hurricanes
4 of 10
For a while, it looked as Jacory Harris would bring Miami back to the promised land, but we all know how that story has gone...
Miami plays in the ACC, which isn't exactly the toughest of divisions, but to ascend to where their program used to be on a consistent national basis anytime soon is just absurd to think about. If you watch their games, they are too busy pretending to be the teams of old and haven't found an identity for themselves.
Until they can finally learn how to play their own style of football, the Hurricanes will continue to disappoint every year.
6. Iowa Hawkeyes
5 of 10
So this is kind of a controversial pick because Iowa has been in somewhat of a decline this past year, but many believed that Iowa would start to play the Iowa football that we have all come to know and love once again.
The fact of the matter is that, since their conference is expanding and including a team like Nebraska, many of the Iowa recruits are going to want to look at other schools, thus not bringing in the talent Kirk Ferentz would normally enjoy.
Ferentz is a great coach, but you can only do so much with kids who grew up in your own backyard.
5. Michigan Wolverines
6 of 10
Sorry, Michigan, there isn't much to say here except for the fact that your glory days are over.
There are just too many coaching changes, as well as controversies, occurring at your university that you will not be able to contend for awhile.
4. Notre Dame
7 of 10
I think that it is always very entertaining to hear Lou Holtz at the beginning of the year always predict Notre Dame to be the surprise team to win the national championship, only to have it go completely wrong as the season progresses.
Notre Dame has made some strides, there is no doubting that, but to say that they are a national title contender in the near future is completely absurd.
This will be especially difficult for them to accomplish, as they are independent, and thus have no means of securing a berth to the championship by means of conference records/championships.
3. Clemson Tigers
8 of 10
Clemson is another team who surprised everybody on National Signing Day with one of the best recruiting classes in the nation. They replaced their loss of Da'Quan Bowers on the defensive line and look poised to make a run at the weak ACC conference.
However, as I stated about recruits previously in this article, one cannot get their hopes up just because a recruit joins their team.
Until they prove themselves on the actual football field, they will be just white noise.
2. Florida State Seminoles
9 of 10
Yes, they had the No. 1 recruiting class this year, but that really means nothing in my book.
Florida State is another team that is hoping that its recent recruiting success accumulated with a rising QB will lead them back to the promised land.
While they did post a fair-enough record this past year, it was really against a schedule that did not provide much "umph." The "solid" teams they did beat were having off-years themselves, and I don't believe the Seminoles will return to their former glory in the near future.
1. Washington Huskies
10 of 10
If I hear another Husky fan loud-mouthing about how great their team is going to be, I don't think I can ever respect Husky fans again.
First, they started by saying that Ty Willingham was going to take their program to new heights. Next, they saw Jake Locker as a God only to be utterly disappointed year after year. And while Steve Sarkisian has definitely improved the coaching staff, the Pac-12 is going to be ultra-competitive with teams such as Oregon, USC and Stanford leading the way.
Husky fans really need to get a grip on reality and realize that their team is not contending for anything anytime soon.
