NBA Trade Rumors: Carmelo Anthony on the Move during All-Star Weekend?

Constantine MadiasFeb 18, 2011

This morning, there were reports from ESPN.com that Carmelo Anthony was indeed scheduled to meet with both the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets in Los Angeles.

Despite Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov's past statement that his team has dropped out of the race for Carmelo Anthony, he's apparently changed his mind.

The Knicks, on the other hand, hope to retain Anthony through a trade, but they might not have the necessary trade pieces to make the deal.

Anthony prefers to play in New York alongside Amare' Stoudemire in Madison Square Garden, but there have been recent developments on the story.

The Nets have reached a tentative agreement with the Denver Nuggets for Anthony. Denver would receive something along the lines of Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and four first-round picks for Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. There would also be other role players involved in the deal too.

Obviously, the Nets wouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger on the trade unless they knew Anthony would be willing to sign an extension with the team for three years and $65 million. Carmelo could easily bolt for New York, but with the Nets moving to Brooklyn in two years, Anthony will be in the state anyway.

The Knicks could offer Landry Fields, Danilo Gallinari and picks for Anthony, but it won't be as sweet as the New Jersey offer.

If the rumors are true, the Denver Nuggets would be in an excellent position to build and develop a young team around Derrick Favors, with two first-round picks in each of the next four years.

There are several pitfalls for New Jersey in this deal, as they won't have any chance of building with youth for years to come.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but it appears as if Carmelo Anthony will be traded after all.

The Nuggets must get something in return for him, since he's declared his loyalty elsewhere.

All-Star Weekend will be overshadowed by "MeloDrama," that's for sure.
