2011 NBA All-Star Game: Winning MVP Should Be Next Task on Derrick Rose's List
Derrick Rose just pumped up 42 points against the best team in the league, the San Antonio Spurs.
And it's still not enough.
That statement in itself should be able to tell you what kind of season Rose has been having. We've heard it over and over again: "Derrick Rose is MVP, Derrick Rose is MVP!"
Well, I don't want just Bulls' fans want to acknowledge that. There should be a consensus around the league that Rose should win the award, however that seems to be anything but a certainty.
While Rose is certainly being recognized by highly reputable and acclaimed sites such as ESPN and NBA.com, he still hasn't gained that worldwide consensus that an MVP should be.
The media votes for the MVP and to my understanding, Rose is at or near the top of their MVP list as of right now, but isn't a sure thing. He needs to change that in order to win the award.
When LeBron James won the award the past two years, no one argued. Even Lakers and Celtics fans admitted that James was the MVP. You don't hear that about Derrick Rose from other teams, for whatever reason.
There's a solution however. If Rose wants to put a stamp on the award once and for all, he should do all he can to win the 2011 All-Star game MVP. By winning this award, Rose will showcase to the rest of the world that he isn't just an All-Star, he's the best of the best. Only those who have the ability to stand out and dominate on the NBA biggest mid-season stage win the award.
Look at the past 10 winners
2010 - Dwyane Wade
2009 - Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal
2008 - LeBron James
2007 - Kobe Bryant
2006 - LeBron James
2005 - Allen Iverson
2004 - Shaquille O'Neal
2003 - Kevin Garnett
2002 - Kobe Bryant
2001 - Allen Iverson
2000 - Tim Duncan
Did you notice the trend? All but one (Dwyane Wade) have been named regular season MVP at least once. It's also appropriate to mention that Wade finished second in 2007 behind LeBron in MVP voting.
But you get my point right? If Derrick Rose is able to win the All-Star game MVP, it would do wonders for his campaign as the MVP. He'd have a chance to compete in not only the best point guard in the game debate, but also the best player in the game debate.
That's been one of the few knocks on Rose's MVP season. Critics have pointed out that he's not even the best at this position, let alone the best in the league.
Winning the All-Star MVP would put all his critics to silence, at least temporarily.
So, Derrick Rose must not let this opportunity pass by.
If he really wants to be the MVP, he better take advantage of this opportunity.
