Dallas Mavericks: Are You Ready for Some Roddy?

Doug BrodessFeb 17, 2011

Rodrigue "Roddy" Beaubois has been a captivating mystery ever since the Dallas Mavericks acquired him from the Oklahoma City Thunder on a 2009 NBA Draft Day trade.

Is it because of his amazing 39-inch vertical leap or his unreal 6'10" wingspan (for a 6'2" guard)?

Is it because of his out-of-this-world athleticism or his highlight-reel moves?

Is it because he can fill it up from practically anywhere on the court?

All of the above.

Last night, Roddy Beaubois made his 2010-11 season debut, and he did not disappoint.

A broken foot had kept him sidelined since the summer, but in the 55th game of the season, Beaubois immediately demonstrated his value to the Mavericks.

In his first game in a Mavericks uniform since he scored 16 points in 21 minutes against the Spurs in last year's playoff finale, Roddy B scored 13 points, handed out six assists and made three steals in 21 minutes.

More than just the numbers he put up, Beaubois changed the tempo of the game.

The League is full of players who can put the ball in the basket and score, but it is a smaller group who can influence the pace of play.

Even veteran point guard Jason Kidd benefited from from Beaubois' presence.

When Beaubois was in the game, Kidd slid over to the shooting guard position, spotted up for threes and knocked down six-of-seven from beyond the arc.

Coach Rick Carlisle has been and will continue to attempt to temper the hysteria that surrounds Beaubois.

But that may be an awfully big job. Beaubois has mesmerized the Mavericks fans from Day 1, and last night's performance does nothing but add fuel to the fan's fire.
