Nebraska Huskers Football: Closer Look at Bo Pelini's New Coaching Staff

Matt DalbyJun 7, 2018

The voids have been filled and Nebraska fans can finally critique the coaching staff that Bo Pelini has assembled.

One thing is certain with the four hand-picked newbies, and that's the fact Pelini went back to his roots.  All of the coaches have Nebraska ties, something fans should generally be pleased with.

Tim Beck: Promoted to Offensive Coordinator

As many assumed, Tim Beck will step in as new offensive coordinator for the Huskers.  He replaces Shawn Watson, whose inconsistency and inability to create an offensive identity ultimately led to his removal.

Pelini obviously has enough confidence in the former running backs coach to promote him. It's also a clear indication to the route Pelini wants to go entering the Big Ten.

Expect the Huskers to instill a more physical mentality on the offensive end, something that should complement the stingy defense that is almost second-nature now.

The days of zone-reads and finesse running schemes may be long gone in Lincoln.

Ross Els: Linebackers Coach

If you haven't heard of Ross Els, you need to know that this is a steal of a coach.  Pelini knows what he is getting with Els, an experienced and proven defensive coach.

Els has served the last six seasons as the Ohio University linebackers coach, as well as the special teams coach the last four.  He was promoted to assistant head coach last season and was Frank Solich's right-hand man.  No need to describe the relationship to Nebraska there.

Further ties stretch back to his days as the head coach at Hastings College in Nebraska, where he went an impressive 32-9 over four seasons.

Els will undoubtedly provide instant credibility to the void left by Mike Ekeler, as he takes over a talented cupboard of linebackers.

Rich Fisher: Wide Receivers Coach

Without question, the mystery pick of the bunch.  Rich Fisher joins Pelini's staff after serving as a high school coach in Massachusetts at The Rivers School.

While his ties to Nebraska aren't very strong, he did coach recent Husker signee Taariq Allen.

His track record includes playing at Colorado on the 1990 National Championship squad, while also coaching shorts stints at Oklahoma State, Idaho and his alma mater.

While the verdict is still out on his ability, Fisher has done some pretty impressive things in the prep ranks.  He took over a flat out awful team at The River School and immediately turned them into an offensive power, averaging nearly 40 points a game last year.  The team also went undefeated in his first season as coach after not winning more than five games in nearly 35 years.

One thing we do know, Pelini is not a man who is left in the dark with candidates.  He knows what he wants from his offense, and this was obviously the man for the job.

Corey Raymond takes over a secondary depleted from last season, but loaded with talent.  Raymond comes to the Huskers after spending the last two seasons with the Aggies of Utah State, where he was the defensive backs coach.

Prior to this stint, Raymond served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at LSU, as well as being an intern for the 2006 season.  Pelini clearly saw something he liked during his three-year stint with the Tigers, enough to reach out and make an offer to Raymond.

As a former college standout and NFL defensive back, Raymond will most likely bring some fire to a defense that already has a lot on the coaching side.  Let's just say Corey will fit right in under Bo, Carl and Co.

John Garrison: Promoted to Assistant Offensive Line Coach

Garrison is no stranger to the trenches at Memorial Stadium, as he was a two-year starter for the Huskers there.  He was also named a captain his senior year under head coach Frank Solich.

Garrison spent last year as a intern for the Husker program and impressed Pelini enough to earn the promotion.  Any time you see a former player promoted through their alma mater, it can't be a bad thing.

He will work exclusively with the offensive line and coach Barney Cotton.
