College Football Recruiting 2012: Top February Commitments

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

Although it is extremely early in the 2012 recruiting cycle, there have been a handful of prospects who have opted to end their recruitment early and commit to a school of their liking. Sometimes players do not like the increased attention from constant calls from college coaches, media requests and tons of mail.

Other times, prospects just really fall in love with a school or know in their hearts early that a particular program is their best fit. February is a flurry month for CFB recruiting as we brace for National Signing Day, reflect on the outcomes of it and still have to start on the next year's class all at the same time.

With 2012 class, a couple players decided that February 2011, not 2012 was the month they announced their decision.

7. Torshiro Davis, DE/LB

1 of 7

Commit: LSU

6'4", 225 pounds, Davis has the versatility to play linebacker and defensive end. He has been timed at 4.5 in the 40 and plays fast in pursuit of ball carriers. He can put his hand down and become a sub-package rusher on passing downs.

He was an all-state selection as a junior, and racked up 15 sacks to go along with nearly 70 tackles. He has Les Miles personally excited and will begin to help recruit others to Baton Rouge. Davis can call himself a proud member of the F-A-M now.

6. Jay Guillermo, OL

2 of 7

Commit: Clemson

Guillermo is a 6'3", 290 pound offensive lineman that likely will develop into an interior offensive guard or center in college. He pledged to Clemson this month, after growing a long time fanatic and will look add depth to the Tiger offensive front starting in 2012.

He looks for work when uncovered and finishes his run blocks very well. Guillermo explodes out of his stance, had 80 pancakes as a junior and graded out at a solid 80 percent on his blocking assignments.

Mike Bellamy just became a happy man.

5. Kenny Lawler, WR

3 of 7

Commit: Arizona State

Lawler is a tall and lanky receiver from California who decided he wanted to commit early to focus on his senior season. 6'3", 175 pounds he looks like the type of receiver that litters the Pac-12, with good hands, deep speed and quickness.

Oregon, Oregon State and Stanford were in the hunt, but Lawler is liking the idea of being a Sun Devil. He's going to be at the USC Junior Day, yet appears comfortable as an ASU pledge.

4. Amos Leggett, DB

4 of 7

Commit: Miami

Leggett is a big corner at 6'0", with the size to match up with big receivers, yet athletic enough to carry them down field. He plays very physical in press/jam coverage on the line and loves to mix it up. Leggett never backs down from anyone and loves a challenge.

He knows he has length and uses his long arms to bat balls down if he can't make the pick. He's a solid pledge to Miami.

3. Kenyan Drake, RB/ATH

5 of 7

Commit: Alabama

Nick Saban's actions say to Georgia "I see your Isaiah Crowell, and raise you Kenyan Drake." Crowell was in the Tide's grasp to come to Tuscaloosa from the Peach State, but now Drake has made the move Crowell didn't.

6'0', 180 pounds, Drake has 4.4. speed and can factor as a runner, receiver and returner. He's playmaker and came from the Alabama Junior Day with an offer. He chose to commit over UGA, Georgia Tech and Tennessee.

2. Tyler Hayes, LB

6 of 7

Commit: Alabama

The Tide strikes again, landing Hayes a play making outside linebacker. 6'3", 215 pounds, Hayes will grow and fill out his frame to the 245 range in college. I think he has the toughness and instincts to play the inside linebacker spot in the Tide's 3-4 scheme.

He was another player who came back home impressed from the Alabama Junior Day and chose to Roll with the Tide over arch nemesis Auburn. He has drawn rave reviews and comparison to current Alabama linebacker Nico Johnson.

1. Connor Brewer, QB

7 of 7

Commit: Texas

Brewer opted to commit to Texas the Monday after the Super Bowl after getting an offer the morning of the Super Bowl. He said he knew right away Texas was the place for him and the fit was right. He's 6'3", 190 pounds, and actually runs a similar offense in high school as Bryan Harsin will install in Austin, as he moves in from Boise State.

Brewer gives the Longhorns another young and promising QB prospect to compete with 2011 signee David Ash for the job after Garrett Gilbert graduates.
