Gunners Write History By Defeating Barcelona at Their Own Game

Mohamed Eldin MasriFeb 16, 2011

Back from the brink—that pretty much sums up Arsenal's comeback after the Gunners wrote history by defeating Barcelona at their own game.

Your eyes are not deceiving you, the Catalans lost to Arsenal after the red and white army played an offensive game against Barcelona.

Labelled as a suicide mission by critics and football pundits around the world, the Gunners' chances were written off even before the game started.

Little did they know that Arsenal had it what it takes to come back from behind and beat the Spanish giants.

Arsenal fans would be deluded if they think that Arsenal has the advantage, Barcelona are still very much the favorites. With that said, it's safe to say that Arsenal demand respect and will go to the Nou Camp gleaming with confidence.

While Arsenal were worthy of their victory, it's safe to say that they were lucky at many times, most notably Messi's lobbed ball, which flirted with the goal only to be a few inches off target.

Arsenal had many chances too; that's what you'd expect from an attacking game. Abidal made crucial saves for La Blaugrana, the most impressive was the cross saved from the clutches of RVP, who was about to nod it goalwards, but Abidal headed it away to save what certainly seemed like a certain goal.

But the most controversial moment of all was arguably the cancelled goal scored by Messi, which in fact was a correct goal, no matter how you look at it.

The linesman declared it offside mainly because it appeared that Messi was offside when the ball bounced of Szecsny and then off of Pedro.

The Catalans truly were unlucky on the night, despite having many chances to score throughout the full 90 minutes.

But perhaps the luckiest on the night was none other than Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager was as stubborn as usual, and Barcelona slaughtered Arsenal in terms of the offside trap.

Surely, if Wenger plans to repeat the same defensive tactics, the Gunners will get killed at the Nou Camp, for it's nearly impossible to imagine the Spanish giants not scoring at the Nou Camp.

While the Arsenal team deserves praise, Clichy was the culprit in the goal scored by Barcelona, and helped Barcelona brake the offside trap more than once. He did, however, make up for his mistakes by assisting RVP for the first goal and was able to remain calm when many would've collapsed.

RVP and Co. were all magnificent on the night, but perhaps the two players that deserved respect the most were Koscielny and Wilshere.

The Frenchman was under massive attacks from the fans and the media, but tonight he was magnificent, making many interception and making many correct and absolutely crucial decisions for the outcome of the game, while Wilshere was an absolutely different story.

The Englishman was perhaps the star of the evening. He could do no wrong, was on the ball more than Xavi and Iniesta (which is definitely saying a lot), and was able to help his side beat the strongest team on the planet.

Need we remind you that this is a 19 year old we're talking about. Indeed, this young man is England's future, and what a bright future it is.

Arsenal were lucky to not have any players injured or suspended tonight and will hope to go to Spain with a fully fit squad, for it is their only chance to beat Barcelona, who will have all the advantages they could ask for to beat the Gunners.

Arsenal have proved a point, that you can play Barcelona at their own game and win. The end result was a frustrated Barcelona side and an ecstatic Arsenal team that fully believe they are championship material.

While Barcelona are still the super favorites, the Gunners no longer should be recognized as Barcelona light, or any other silly names, but rather be recognized as Arsenal, the pride of London.
